Finaly
« on: June 04, 2016, 07:00:37 PM »
Finaly i have a machined buildabel block. Painted and ready
to build. I have never had an engine fighting me like this.
cracked blocks,2 machine shop owners retiring, everything
around me falling apart so i had to repair it instead. My father
having a tripple bypass operation so i had to take care of
everything of his buissnes to
Final atack was the differential in my D.D.broke when i was
going to pick up the block att the machine shop ::)

But now i have 2 blocks so im building a 390 PI with speed pro
flat tops, a comp cams 294 S,ported C4 g heads streetmaster
intake.870 avenger shorty castiron headers for the Galaxie

And a 447 stroker with Mahle flat tops some new heads more cam and home
built IR EFI based on Jays adapter.....Need to find a lighter car
for that Engine. Something like a 64 fairlane or falcon or a 55-56 Ford

Congrats Heo!  Glad to hear you will have a running engine soon.  I think we can all appreciate persistence in the face of adversity.  It makes the beer taste a lot sweeter when the job is finally done!
A careful study of failure will yield the ingredients for success.

Big congrats Lars!   Looking forward to seeing pics of the 2 builds, and getting the Galaxie back on the road.
A Question: have you made any mods to your shortie headers?   I understand they can have sealing problems at the outlet, due to having a two-bolt flat flange instead of a tapered donut seal like the other cast manifolds.  Interested in hearing your opinion.

Thanks,
Bruce

What i have done to the flange is i made two gaskets
out of copper sheat 1mm thick each. And heated them
with the gas torch to aneal them. And they sealed fine
for several years.
one side i had to retorque after a while but staye sealed
after that

Shall trye to take some photos if i find the camera

Edit: There is this castiron piece between the header
and the flange on the exhaust pipe. I chucked this up
in the lathe and macined it flat and machined a ridge
like a O-ring on both sides of it that grabs in to the
copper......remembered after a while ::)

Finaly im making some progress.First im building the 390 pi that came in the Galaxie.Nothing to write home to
mum about realy but BruceS wanted some pictures. The block I was going to use for the stroker was cracked.
I preassure tested it with 6Kg/cm2 with no leak and no
vissible crack so i thought it was ok. But when i started to grind on it the crack become vissible for the
naked eye. i Could not find another block so i ordered parts for the pi and delivered it to the machine shop
for a line hone and paralell decking and a hone with stress plates. There came the next setback he was
retireing and closing the shop :( I sweet talked him in to do my block. With the new pistons it cleaned up all
scratces and stayed within tolerances. Then ifound a block for the stroker thanks to Landlubberatsea on this
forum. So its in the machine shop now (more sweet talking)

I could not find my cambearingtool i made 35 years ago. So i borrowed a tool from a friend
and the bearings ended up crocked ::) i tried to straigten them
up. and it ended with i bought new bearings and searced for
my own tool and found it
So i installed the cam and crank a couple of weeks ago
Today i installed the rod and pistons

I had no piston cone for 4.11 so i made one in the lathe from som bronze scrap my father had in the
foundry

checking the ring gap

Mounting the rings

The PI rods was realy beat up luckily the cracked engine had reconditioned rods  and was a auto with
hydraulic cam so less risk its over reved in the past

Paralell decked to zero
I painted the block first with one cote PPG epoxi primer and then two coats PPG Global Black mixbase

OOOOPS Forgot to mount one..............No i counted them before i started and there was 17

Ok tolerances, On the big side but HV pump so...

opened up the pump and preoiled it
A new pump allready scratched  :(  To soft Steel in the cover

Nice collection in the oil pick up :o :o i know many that just reuse the old pickup and this is what you find in them

Opened it up and going to let it soak overnight then im going to install some perforated steel and fold the edge
back over. Ikea got cheap kitchen utensils made of perforated stainles so i have to go there if i dont find any
in the garage......How shall i manage that without taking the wife with me and spend a whole day at Ikea ::) ::)

One thing i do when i use studs. Is i put a steel ball
in the bottom of the hole and thigten it slightly
that way you got the stud to be paralell with the
hole and the treads  slightly preeloaded
Worked all the time when i was working as a repair
man in the industri and we had some problem with
studs breaking

Great stuff!  Picking up gems of knowledge along the way.  Looking forward to the rest of the build.

finished the pickup, With the perforated dish from
something i dont know the English name for.
But its a kitchen thing my wife gave me

I just had to cut away 2mm around it to fit then folded the
Edge back over it

Thanks Bruce. Looks like im the one picking up knowledge ;)
Any way my wife dont know she saved me from a trip to Ikea  ;D
I was going to install the windage tray and oilpan. But i have to
Mill some slots in the windage tray for the  studs. And there was a
birtday party i had to go to. And then i had to weld a ladder for
my father. So making a "shower head" is all i had time for to day

That's a cool idea Heo, using common kitchen tools to solve a problem. We used to have a trick I learned from another racer. Since the OEM Ford pickup tube is wide open under that metal strap (allowing a lot of junk into the oil stream) we wrapped the round section with steel window screen mesh and tied it off with safety-wired SS wire. Worked well in a SBF dragster but it was torn down every week (or it more often blew up every week!) so it may not be a practical street fix.

Still wonder why Ford didn't have a a full screen like all Gen 1 SBC's!

Any chance for a few pics of your tapered ring installer and the process you used to make it? I have some scrap and a large lathe, I have been wanting to try making a couple.

Great stuff Heo!  I'll have to remember that ball bearing trick for the studs.

Looks like you've got everything well covered.  Your strainer oil pickup reminds me of the SOHC Cobra guy I did some engine work for a few years ago.  With the big 1150 Dominator carb there was no room for an air filter to clear the Cobra hood.

He used an upside-down spaghetti strainer over the carb  :o

Yes The strainer got big holes in it. But this engine
is not for a daily driver.A couple of thousand miles
each summer and i change oil every spring and fall.
On all my cars
So i think they are just fine. Catching things big
enough to destroy the oilpump

WConley im trying to cover everything but many
years since i built an Engine.
This is just a backyard blueprinted PI engine with
Worked heads and a modern cam. What do you guys
guess 375 HP 425 TQ ???
