Why is it that a Bosch O2 sensor will last 100k-200k miles, and probably 15+ years, in a new vehicle, but seems to fail fairly quickly in any aftermarket setup? And these cars are typically not being driven in snow and rain. It seems odd to me.

I think its because almost all new cars use a narrow band O2 sensor, not a wideband.  The narrow band sensors are probably more reliable.

One more thing, if the Super Cobra Jet moves too another place where its a colder place and changes the gears in the rear, could the oil cooler be the source so that the oil will get 'too' cool. . . . . . the cooler starts to cool the oil as soon as you start the engine and start driving, could this result in that the oil will bee too cold for the engine?

Yes, this is 'very' possible!   ;)

Ever notice the "grill covers" as mounted to the front of semi tractors riding down the highway when operating in colder climates?  Or have you ever seen the NASCAR guys "adjusting" (adding or removing the duck tape) on the front grill exposure for the purpose of aiding in engine temperature control?   :-\

The new LSU 4.9 sensors are much better than the old style.  Looking back at sensors going bad on me, I'd say not letting all the moisture in the exhaust cook out before powering up the sensor was likely the biggest mistake I was making.

If the dishes and valve relief are the same, flip them upside down and check pin height.  Easy to do on a hard surface, line up pins and see if they are the same from one to the next, building a bridge

If it's a 1.76 compression height piston (for all eight) I would expect it to be 10.138 or so total stack height, which would leave you right about what you see with a 390 crank.  .035 in the hole is pretty deep, many have run there but compression will be low and it needs to be because quench will be poor.

If it's a budget engine, which I assume with used pistons, and you want to get around, it'll do OK assuming you don't put a cam too early or small in it and watch the timing curve.  I did one like that as a temp motor and it ran very nice, not fast but a good runner.

If you wanted to get a little fancier, cut the deck to 10.150 and run a Felpro 1020 and you'd be closer to .057 quench, that's about the top of good quench, but not bad quench either.  Then cam accordingly

I've had an Innovate LM-2 for around 10 years now.  I bought it because it has analog inputs, supports data logging, does ODBII.  It was NOT cheap at the time for the kit.  What I have found with mine is using the newer LSU 4.9 sensors seem to last longer...still on the first one actually.  I always run whatever motor the setup is installed on for at least 15 minutes to get it good and hot, all the vapor out of the exhaust before I even fire the LM-2 up.  This seems to help immensely with sensors failing or getting stuck in a warm up mode forever.  Innovate has serviced the box twice when I was having issues, but the past few years it's been pretty stable.

I used Innovate for about 5 years before pulling the plug on their stuff. Got into it to the point of adding in a “brain” so I could link in other sensors. Nothing but trouble with their stuff and customer service not very helpful.
I switched to AEM and have been pleased with their stand alone units. Only problem I had was the supplied sensor was of poor quality. Perhaps they are trying to keep costs down on entry level kits?
ANY unit you choose MUST be paired with a quality unit like a genuine Bosch. Yes, I was yelling there. Trying to save you grief on getting system to work the first time and continuing to work. Even with good sensors the time will come where you must replace the sensor. Might be every season, might be every three seasons depending on the fuel it sees and how many hours on it.
( unless you pull sensor after achieving final tune).
Mine stay in cuz there is no final tune, I’m always tuning.

Joe, I have an edelbrock performer rpm intake for it. It'll look almost the same as it did previously, but I think I'm going to leave the intake unpainted this time and now I have a Hipo air cleaner for it. I think the trick flow heads should work well! I had Jason Anderson go through them and fix them up so they don't back up anymore. Nothing wrong with the trick flow heads, just feels a little wrong to bolt someone else's parts on it when we make our own that flow better. I'm just getting over-eager to get the car on the road this spring. We're getting over the final hurdles with our heads, so there's always a chance that those are ready before I drop the engine in the car.

Making a 390 out of a 360. Upon disassembly of the 360 (99% sure it's never been touched before),we found these pistons...6 marked 360,1 marked 3904V, 1 marked the elusive 3604V. Pistons all the same. Thoughts?  Anyway, it's a budget deal, block really decent standard, nice reconditioned 390 crank and rods. The 360 pistons are about .035 in the hole. Will that work with D2 heads?  Thanks!
