I have my 482 choked down pretty good.
Old Small Hookers, 2 1/2" Heavy wall steel pipe with mandrel bends and two welded Thrush chamber cans
all the way past the valance.
It's still really loud.
If you find a quite switch that you can buy I'm all in. ;D

Right now I am running REF headers, a Magnaflow X pipe, and Magnaflow Street-Series mufflers (straight thru design, not chambered).  I am considering some quieter mufflers, but I'm curious if this has any effect on the amount of perceivable header ping.  I'd really rather not have to change out those headers if I can avoid it.  It's louder at the engine bay than behind the tailpipes at idle.  Younger me wouldn't care, but older me needs something quieter so I don't feel guilty firing it up on a Saturday morning.

I'm struggling to understand the sound dynamic difference between this and other cars I've built over the years.  I had a cammed GT500 with long tube headers and a similar exhaust setup, and the engine bay was quiet by comparison.  I imagine the wall thickness was greater on those Kooks headers than the REFs.  All of the sound was behind the car.  That's what I'd like on the Mach 1.

If I just swap out the mufflers for something quieter, do you think it'll get me what I'm looking for, or should I start looking for a different set of headers or exhaust manifolds?

I used them.  Yes, they position the engine forward a bit, but there are spacer shims. Even with the shims adjusted all the way forward (shifting the engine back), the engine was still further forward than the original position.  This actually helped with two of the header bolts that were originally jammed against the shock tower brace, but made fabricating a puller fan shroud a nightmare.  I have about 1/16" clearance between the electric fans and the belt, but I did design a piggyback 8-rib drive setup for the accessories and blower (I took a CVF Beast 8-rib and then designed my own piggyback pulley setup for the crankshaft so it's two different diameter drives, one for the acc and larger one for the blower).  Unless you are planning something similar, everything should fit fine.  I managed to get a double Spal 4000cfm setup crammed in there without interference.

Oh for sure on the prices of grille pieces!  Is that the car Evan Smith has now?

I don't know who Evan Smith is, but if he has a car that looks like this, it is probably it--there isn't another like it. I sold it to someone up in Michigan, but I've heard it's down in Florida now.

Just wondering who sells just the screen . I have an old Moroso pick up that the screen is ripped on. Want to replace the screen material. One thing that puzzles me is how it ripped to begin with. The motor broke a rod many moons ago but how did the screen rip?? Thanks

The Montego already had the Cyclone dash and buckets installed when I purchased the car, but I converted it to a manual and added the console. Aside from a reproduction front spoiler, everything else was FoMoCo, including the Magnum 500 wheels. I had wanted to complete a Cyclone wagon, and had located a hood, but its condition was a little rough and I couldn't justify removing the original one as it was just so clean and original (except for the added FoMoCo hood scoop, from a Cougar I believe). Of course finishing out the Cyclone look was going to be stupid pricey--a nice grille and headlamp assy was going to be difficult, if not impossible, to locate.

...I do regret selling it.

Run it, Jim.  My big SOHC ran with one rod 10 grams out of balance compared to the rest, went out the back door at 7500 and I never felt any kind of vibration.

From my research:

"Most stock street engines will run smooth enough if they are balanced to 1 oz. (28 grams), although many late model engines have much tighter factory specifications (as little as 4 to 6 grams). For a high-revving performance application, aim for the recommended 2 grams or less."

Which category would your engine be?
