Ohhh, I wouldn't have bragged....  machinery has an annoying tendency to prove me wrong anytime I *think* I know something.

In no way shape or form do I mean to be bashing on Carl's reproductions, they certainly fill a void where the car show enthusiast needs the correct number, and that is cool.

Yeah, not bashing Carl's efforts either. He's a good guy that has helped out the FE community in many ways. If he had demanded the carbs be original in every way, I'm sure they would be 3-4 times the cost, at least.

And underwater demolition is about the only way I could catch a fish.  ;D

Nope, nice and clean idle, mixture screws are at exactly 1 turn out and 12.5a/f is about right for idle (on my car)
Obviously lean when you fire it cold, but once up to temp it does just fine.

Oh, and the main reason I posted this thread at all is because I have been hearing forever that the reproduction bk/bj's are just like the originals.
They are not even the same size, you could get much closer with an pre -3 1850, just reduce IAB to .063 and you pretty much have BK/BJ calibration.

HI Drew, interesting post. Question how different would a new 1850 (think calling the street warrior now) be calibration wise from the originals? Am surprised that the pre -3 is so close.

Thanks Steve

The new 1850's are kinda weird, I wouldn't run one without being able to REALLY inspect it.

1850-1 and 1850-2 are identical to the BK/BJ's with the exception of their IAB being .067 instead of .063
The 1850-3 is the same as the -1 and -2 except it uses an orange pump cam and has no emulsion tube.

Hi Drew, what size jets did you end up going with..?  or did you keep them the same.. 60 on the primary carb and 67 on the secondary carb..

The original primary jets were 66. The secondary plate was a #6, 67 equivalent is what I remember in these carbs. They are both the same primary and secondary jetting/plate size. There were no changes from how they were supplied from Carl's Ford Parts.  They run beautifully on Drew's engine. They should be damn close on mine.

Drew:
What did you get the idle down to? 850-900 rpm?

Thank you Drew for the info. This confirms what a Holley tech told me yrs ago that the 1850s (-1 &-2s) were the same as the BK/BJs. A lot of guys told me I was wrong and they couldn`t be the same. I still look for -1s & -2s at swapmeets but not so much any more as I have a bunch if I get the urge to build another  2x4 set up.

xr7cat:
When I said "weird' I was trying to be polite.  What I mean, is they are setup way too lean, and often holes aren't drilled all the way through, or there are broken drill bits, etc in the metering block.  I try to be careful about having a blanket generalization about them as each dash number/revision is different from the last one.

67gt500:
Jets in these were 60/67
Same in C3AE-9510-C carbs, 62's in 1849's.
So I kept the stock jet sizes as it makes the most sense.

67426gt500:
66 would be the stock size in an 1850, which as stated the venturi and throttle plates are a different size.  If you put 66's in these, they would be REALLY fat at cruise.
-idle in gear is 900, if you want it lower that isn't hard to do, tho I'd suggest adjusting idle speed via the secondaries.  Since I installed a set screw you can adjust it with an allen wrench while the carbs are installed.

GJCat427:
The only difference in calibration is the idle air bleed, the secondary high speed bleed is slightly different as well, but it isn't nearly as important to overall usage.
A lot of guys tell me I'm wrong still....  They cling to the idea that there was some magic that makes carburetors work together in a pair.
