Holley question.... ( a few more questions )

Rebuilt a Holley 600 Va. secondary for my 352, runs nice now

Used a Quick Fuel rebuild kit, had the black bowl bolt washers, the diameter is small but squish out

Had to tighten the front bowl bolts more than the rear bowl bolts

The placement hole on the front bowls are larger than the placement holes on the rear bowl

You can see the washers on the rear bowl after tightening

The front washers squish to where the built in bolt washer touches the bowl

Gonna get some regular washers but was wonderin want yall use ??

Also, on the carb, I did not notice till the mill was running

There is no ported vacuum on the metering plate ??

I need this for my vac. advance on my distributor

Any way to fix this versus getting another metering plate ??

I always use Holley kits.  Have heard stories of problems with using other people kits.  Nothing horrible, but like yours, the stuff is not quite "right".

I've started using the black plastic washers for fuel bowl.  Holley gives them with every kit now.  Much more reusable compared to the paper gaskets from years back.  Never had a leak or issue with them.

As for ported vacuum?  How about drilling a hole and installing a pipe fitting?  Or can you buy the correct plate?  I'll dig through my pile of 600 stuff and see if I have another plate with a port fitting.  It's yours if you need it.

on my 600s, the vacuum port is right under the front of the sec. vacuum diaphragm. if the brass nipple is missing, easy to miss or maybe it is plugged.

I've had problems with the black plastic washers leaking. Chased a stubborn weeping that I thought was the accelerator pump cover. After resurfacing both cover and bowl it still weeped, not alot, just enough to dampen the bottom part of the bowl with an occasional drip. Pulled the bowl, mounted in the mill and using a 4 flute end mill spot faced the bowl screw surface and found it took about a .009-.010" cut to true up the mating surface. The old paper gaskets would conform to just about any surface for a fuel tight seal...The plastic washers? Not so much. I now spot face all bowl screw surfaces as SOP when I build a Holley.

Interesting.  I can see it happening though(and at first was skeptical).  Guess I've been real lucky up to this point?  Or the fact that all my carbs are over 20 yrs old, they were machined better back then?

Or maybe lived a charmed life? I've found the problem on both old and newer [less that 10 y.o.] I've used other plastic washers, mainly white ones from a hardware store. A little thicker but a 'reusable' type. I haven't had any problems until using the Holley black washers. Maybe they are a lot harder and don't conform as easily.

Same.  I had to pick up an Edelbrock kit for a 4160 at Pep Boys because I needed pump diaphragms and that's all they carry.  It was at least decent and got me by for a bit.

Any have a vacuum secondary cover ??

Also, Tommy or anyone that has a front jet plate with a ported vacuum tube on it

The 600 Holley I was rebuilding earlier has only the aluminum plate ??

I guess I am getting old - I actually prefer the paper washers.  They seal well and have a little give to them and don't put all the clamp load against the bowl and block gaskets.

I had one of those really inexpensive Holleys come in on a customer project.  It had no sealing gasket or thin metal plate behind the die cast secondary metering plate.  I decided that was doomed to fail in service from eventual gasket deformation, found a plate & such from my stash, installed them, and continued on.

Not that I go through my carbs very often, but nice not to have to keep buying those little paper gaskets for fuel bowls.  I was skeptical of the plastic rings, but all my hot rods have them without issue(everything I own has 2x4's on it).


I'll poke around in my Holley junk box this weekend and see what I have extra.  Should have something.

I found some fiber washers at ace, a bit thicker than Holley paper washers

They fit the bolt well and the bowl relief as well

I have a good metering plate and a center hung bowl if anyone can use them

Those look what I need

I noticed the vacuum port, all the 4160 carbs I have seen had a pressed in tube

The plate I have has a large large hole where the tube would be pressed in

Perhaps 2 different castings ??

The one with the large hole may be drilled into ported vacuum and the hole threaded from factory ??


Are they spares ya do not need ??

I would gladly pay ya or trade for them... 427 block, stack of hundreds, milk an whiskey .....
