We only ran the timing at 29 degrees, as I was concerned with our crappy pump fuel and iron heads. Still made good power for an engine with mild street cams and 10.3 to 1 compression.

Sounds like a nice solid street build. I like that it's all Ford iron!

I still think it should be a requirement to post a picture of the engine when posting power numbers. (hint hint)  ;D

Sorry, I was getting around to it. Was having problems transferring pics from my phone. Here you go.

This was before we swapped to the electric water pump and changed carb. The carb in the pic was the straight out of the box Holley 850HP I bought for this engine, but it ran so badly we swapped to the dyno operators known good carb.

Here's a link to my background with this engine: http://fepower.net/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=4636.0

The shop where I had the engine dyno run was the same place I had run my 406/462 a few years ago, so for interest the dyno operator overlaid the best run from that engine with this one. Here's a link to the build of that engine: http://fepower.net/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=1498.0

To recap, the 462 had 11.5 to 1 comp, similar duration solid flat tappet cam with about 0.650" lift, a set of ported Survival heads and a heavily modified 6V intake using 3 500cfm Holleys, and was using a pair of long branch 63/64 cast exhaust headers.

It's not really a fair comparison, as we tuned the 462 quite a bit, but with the SOHC engine I only wanted to get the engine fired up and bed in the rings. I'm sure there's lot more power available by just increasing the total ignition timing.

Wow - I'd say you have those cams really advanced, or it wants more ignition timing.  I haven't seen a SOHC dyno curve with peak torque at such low rpm.   I'm sure it pulls off the line like a freight train, but you're probably leaving 100+ HP on the table at the top end.

Nice to see genuine Ford iron  :)  Enjoy!!

The cams are at RH 105, LH 107 on an ICL of 110. Total timing was only 29 degrees, as I wanted it to run okay on our crap pump fuel. I know there is a lot more to be gained with more timing.

The guy running the dyno said the heads definitely were not holding the engine back. He could tell from the VE numbers that with either a better intake, or bigger cams, the power would have kept building at higher rpm. I do have the Hilborn IR EFI induction to go on when the engine is installed in the car, hopefully that will breathe a bit better than the factory dual plane 1x4.

Yup, installed pretty well advanced I'd say!  For a street iron engine that's the direction I'd go.  You're much safer with valve clearance and the torque is where you're really going to use it.

I'd say you have a smart builder.  That engine is going to be happy  :)

Towards the end of the dyno session, the engine started to develop a miss at idle. We thought it may have been a loose plug wire, or a vacuum leak. But I was running out of time and didn't have a chance to find the reason until this morning. I removed the RH valve cover to reveal this.....

It's the #4 intake rocker. Looks like there may have been an existing crack in the arm. Luckily, I found all the pieces and the lash cap, and there appears no other damage.

I've managed to get hold of an adjustable rocker arm, but I'm not sure if it will clear my early, low profile magnesium valve covers. So, if anyone has a useable, non-adjustable rocker arm they would like to sell me, please let me know.
