I have a pending legal case with Bill Coon, otherwise I would post many more facts.

One thing I can tell you for sure, in just about every instance you mention his name in the car crowd around the downriver area of Detroit, the first thing they say is: "You mean he is still alive, someone hasn't killed him yet?"

When Coon first started this head deal, his information guy was a farmer who was his financial backer. This fellow ( I can't remember his name) told me to contact Bill direct. He told me to send him $1000 down payment and I was #9 on the list and my heads would be ready in about a month and a half. A few months went by and I saw on the FE forum that he was delivering heads to all kind of people. I called and he told me to send the $4000 and my heads would ship next week.I called him and said "where are my heads". He said my heads were ready and to send him $124 and some odd cents for shipping costs. I asked him to ship them now and I would have a check in the mail. He said he didn't do business that way and he would ship them when he got the money for freight. I sent the money. After a couple of weeks and no heads, i called and was told " I'll send them when I feel like it. You got a set of heads from that guy in California and I'm not in a hurry to send your heads."
About 4 months went by with me calling him every few days and him saying he would ship them in a day or so. After about 5 months, I hired a lawyer in Austin,Texas to contact contact him that a lawsuit would be filed if he didn't ship the heads. He told the lawyer he would ship them the next day. After a couple of weeks and no heads, the lawyer called him again and he said he would ship them that day and would call him with the shipping #. A couple of weeks go by and no shipping # and no heads !!! The lawyer called him and they got in a big cuss fight with my attorney telling him what a big crook he was and we would see him in court.

We would have to file suit in Michigan so my lawyer rounded up an attorney there. Suit filed --court date set. His lawyer showed up at court with $5000 and that was the end of it. My lawyer said that since there were no written contracts, that was the best we could do. Court cost and attorney fees cost were over $3000.  wHAT A GREAT LEGAL SYTEM WE HAVE---ONLY THE LAWYERS AND CROOKS MAKE MONEY

For those interested in this sad and continuing saga, go to the FE Forum and search on Roger Gordon's or Bill Coon's names. Lots of posts recently (late February/March 2012) over there on why the heads continue to sit unfinished, others who have gotten burned and some great ideas on how Coon can 'fix' his dilemma.

Kudos btw to Bob Hasty for carrying the torch (a search on his name will invariably bring up two sides: those who blast Coon and the few odd fellows who unbelievably support him) and for standing up for those who don't want to lose their hard-earned money to a couple of cons.

Since the first part of my court case with Bill Coon has ended I thought I would post some of the details, in particular one instance involving a car just to give you a glimpse of how Bill Coon operates.

Some background; I stored some machinery and cars at Bill Coons property several years ago.  The agreement was that I would give him a 289 HiPo long block to offset the storage, there was no written contract.  Naturally, if your reading this you'd guess things would go south with Bill Coon involved, and they did.  I never had keys to the building so just loading up my stuff and leaving was not an option.  Finally after several years I had the Romulus police escort me there to retrieve my stuff, Bill refused me access and then within a month I started getting letters from his attorney demanding payment including back rent.  Eventually he started going down the road of auctioning my stuff off, of course by publishing the auction in a small obscure local 3 or 4 page newspaper.  Then I had to take him to court, which dragged out over about 4 months.  The court awarded that my possessions to be returned but also awarded Bill Coon $3600 for rent because he lied in court claiming that I had agreed to pay him $300 a month to rent his building. 

Of course he turned the retrieval of my stuff into an ordeal and when I did get most of it back, it was rusty or worst.  So here the story and pictures of one of the cars.

I had wanted a moderator for the return of my machinery and cars, so Bill Coon suggested a mutual friend who we will call BB.  To move the cars and one piece of machinery a large HiLo was needed and Billl Coon just happened to have a newly refurbished $20K + one sitting right there in his yard.  So BB made a deal to pay Bill Coon $20 for diesel fuel to load up the cars and the one machine.  That went well for loading one car and moving a couple others.  But then it came time to load up this 64 Mercury Montclair and Bill Coon said its too wet back there, his machine would get stuck.  Fortunately, I suspected Coon would pull this kind of stunt so I had a backup plan to have the tow yard across the street come over and pick up the remaining cars.  They didn't have any trouble picking up the Merc with their loader....

So we get the three remaining cars over to the tow yard.  I had about an hour before the junkyard came around to pile the cars on a semi going to the crusher.  Right after I got the car at an auction I had removed a few exterior pieces of trim and thrown them inside the Merc.  There was time to remove a few more trim parts before the car was gone.  That was it for the Merc, because of Coons greed and vengeance only a few parts were saved off of a rare car.  It was a 64 Montclair 2door fastback, black bench seats, 352, power steering, power brakes.  The front and back seat were in great condition, so was all the glass and fastback roof trim.  The two other cars were 64 Fairlane 2 doors, one post and one hardtop.  Both were very rusty but Coon basically torn them apart with his loader, the whole front end was missing off one car and both engines and transmissions were removed by Coon.  I'll post pictures of these later.

So that's the story of just one incident in getting my stuff back from Bill Coon.  Some of the other parts of the ordeal are even uglier.

Coon has appealed to a higher court, he wants more money out of me.  The first judge took the unusual step of applying a bond of $5000 for Coon to appeal, which Coon's lawyer filed a motion to have it reduced to $2500 which was granted.  The next court date is pending.

Edit: Just added the two 64 Fairlanes to the link.  The front of the blue Fairlane is the pile of junk.  Coon pulled out the pedals from this car.  The front of the gold Fairlane is completely missing, Coon ran over it with his loader and smashed the front end into the ground.  Both cars were missing the engines/transmissions.

Also the 64 Merc had a perfect front inner fender, no rust under the battery tray at all.  The car was off the road early in its life only showing 79K miles.

Yes, after the week I had last week with the Drag Week thrash, that was welcome good news.  For anyone who didn't see the post on the FE Forum, the collection officer for the Romulus, Michigan court system finally got tired of waiting for Bill Coon to pay the rest of the judgment I had against him, and went to Coon's machine shop, Extreme Machines in Whitmore Lake, to take some of the SOHC heads that were there and auction them off to pay the judgment. 

My friend Bob Stone, who is a former police officer in the Detroit area with a long history of dealing with the antics of Mr. Coon, went with the court officer and one other collection officer.  They went into the office there and presented the owner of the company with the paperwork, and demanded to seize the heads.  According to Stone the owner was very upset and came very close to being hauled off to jail for obstruction of police procedures, or something like that; I don't know the legal terms.  As I understand it the issue was that Coon owed Extreme Machines some money for the machine work on the heads, and without the heads there anymore the owner thought that he would not be able to get paid.  He called Coon, and then he called the local police department.  The local police came, looked at the paperwork, and told the owner he had to cooperate. 

Rather than release the heads, the owner wanted to pay the bill.  Probably the lesser of two evils for him, and for all I know he didn't realize what kind of a person Coon was when he started dealing with him.  Hard to blame him for that, I didn't know Coon was such a dishonest person when I started dealing with him either.  The court officer gave me a call this afternoon when he was at Extreme Machines to get the exact amount of the judgment that had yet to be paid, and then the owner wrote the court officer a check for that amount.  According to Bob Stone the court officer went to the bank and cashed the check right away, so in a week or so I should finally get paid the full amount of the judgment, and this whole fiasco will be over. 

Looking back on this entire mess I am again struck by how irrational Coon's behavior was through the whole thing.  After the conciliation court hearing he could have paid $1885, which was less than what he owed me, and been done with the whole thing.  Instead he refused to pay, and also appealed the decision.  This led to an increased judgment against him of around $4300.  His car was seized to make part of the payment, and some of his heads would have been seized today if the owner of Extreme Machines wouldn't have stepped in to pay the bill.  I'm sure that he is not a popular person right now at Extreme Machines, which by all accounts is a reputable business, so Coon's behavior has probably damaged the relationship with the vendor for his heads.  Talk about cutting your nose to spite your face!  None of this behavior is that of a rational person, and  I wonder what's wrong upstairs with Mr. Coon.  If he had just been honest about his situation, probably none of this would have happened, but he seems incapable of telling the truth and facing up to his responsibilities.  Too bad; for a while he was making some nice SOHC heads.  Thank goodness for Robert Pond's heads.

For my part, from start to finish I am out a few hundred bucks, plus the original amount that Coon owed me.  From a money standpoint only, my legal actions against Coon have not paid off.  Its easy to see why few people pursue legal actions in relatively small dollar cases like this; there's just no payback.  However, the personal satisfaction I got from holding Mr. Coon's feet to the fire and forcing him to be responsible for his behavior was well worth the few hundred bucks it cost me.  I doubt that he is smart enough to have learned from this situation, despite the fact that it cost him more than double what the court originally told him he had to pay.  Some people will never learn...

Jay, you missed a point as you're too modest. 

Although I also read from Day 1 your saga with Coon on the old Forum when it became public something was amiss, I also know it was not your intent to drag this out in public, until the now infamous mouthpiece, Roger Gordon, started to speak up.

That said, your efforts and clearly written posts both here and over there ended up providing very valuable information to many a SOHC fan. Caveat emptor, for sure. I'm sure many today would tip their hats for your efforts.
