Y Block Ford hits 1.6 hp/cu in
« on: August 16, 2014, 09:39:46 AM »
Come on Jay  We are just crying for you to get on board and make us some new parts.  We are still stuck with flat tapped cams. dual plane intakes or hand fabbed single plane.  With your help 2hp/cu is possible  Think of all the scrubs we could annihilate.

With the cast manifold, the hp/ci is 1.55, and Ted's 375ci that made 585hp comes in at 1.56 hp/ci, it is the manifold that makes a difference.  If we had had Jerry's sheetmetal, I think we could have possible been over 600 hp with the 375.   Joe-JDC.

Joe, my engine specs out very close to Mummert's except with a point less compression.  Jerry's manifold made 430 lb ft of torque at 5200 but flattened out at about 6400.. I want him to make one with slightly bigger and shorter runners so it will hold on past 7000. I would like to know the diam of the tubing Mummert used.

Just looking at the picture and comparing the manifold to the headers, I would guesstimate the intake runners to be at least 2" tapered/welded size.  You could take different tubing and squeeze the ends in a vice to a rectangular shape and come up with a port dimension fairly easy, to determine the size used for an intake.  John has a new intake gasket that he has made for sale that is a universal fit--L/R, that is larger than the Fel-Pro, and if you used that as a pattern for an intake dimension, I think you would be close to optimum tubing size for a high rpm intake.  Joe-JDC

Joe,  on my motor Jerry's intake was 30 ft/lb better than the Mummert 2 plane. and equal to the hilborn injection.  His runners are tapered also

Conventional wisdom says that a rectangular port should be at least 88% of the valve diameter in cross-sectional area, and 80% for a round port.  If the valve is 1.940", then the area of the intake runner should be at least 1 3/4" minimum, and for higher rpm, I think bigger would be better.  A taper is always a good idea in the intake manifold port to the head.  A small amount of taper is all that is necessary, as long as there is a continuous taper, and not an area for reversion.  That plenum looks small on John's intake, so the spacer must be making up the difference for it to work that well.  Joe-JDC.

LMAO on the "scrubs we could annihilate" Royce!  1.6 HP/cube is pretty damned impressive for the old Y-block.  What should I build for you guys?  A 500" capable block?  Tunnel port heads?  Just let me know, and I'll get going on it right away  ;D ;D

Royce,
Did I see Mummert on those heads?  Is that Dick Mummert or an offspring / relative? My Dad was a career Ford man and spoke of him in the early 60s... Are those heads generally available?  Hope this performance can spur some renewed interest in the old Y block.

Jay  Since you asked, I think a tunnel port head would be a sterling idea!!  Imagine those babies in the magic over under configuration.

A fancy adapter to put on a High rise single plane intake would be nice too...

Bruce,  you did indeed see Mummert on the heads.   I am not sure if he is any relation to the fellow you mention.. He is from El Cajon Ca., and is the leading developer of Y Block speed goodies. http://www.ford-y-block.com/

There has been a groundswell of interest in Y blocks in the last 5 yr. The availability of good intakes and heads has nearly doubled the output.. When I first got interested in them a guy who had a honest 300 horse 312 was a major hitter.  Now 600 hp is just on the horizon and will be reached soon..

A little know fact is that Jay may be a closet Y Blocker.. I know he can recite from memory the outstanding features and accomplishments of the Y Block design as they have been related to him by his friend J.C.

Yes, those attributes have been drilled into my head for almost 30 years.  Y-blocks are known for:

- The torque of a locomotive!
- The RPM of a die grinder!
- Factory mushroom lifters (Banned by Engine Masters)
- Every one's a sideoiler!

I could go on and on... ;D

Hey the y blockers are talking a bit. Since the Y block forum is setup in such a way that half of the users cant get on and reply there anymore we get to talk and share information everywhere else.
Dick Mummert is a relative, still kickin' at 84 years old.
There is a lot going on in El Cajon.  Put your seat belts on boys 600hp is gonna come and go and we'll be talking about 700hp in the next 2 years.
