FE Technical Forum / Carter P4600HP Questions
« on: December 10, 2025, 04:39:52 PM »
My manual fuel pump, with less than 5 hours, decided to crap out on my 445. I used one of the Carter P4600HP pumps on a GM 383 build I recently did. While I have not put that motor through its paces, the pump seems to be ok at steady speed or quick zips. It is a little loud but not once the motor fires you can't hear it. Overall, I have had no complaints on that one.

My question, assuming 3/8 lines, should this be enough to feed a solid 500Hp/550Tq FE? Running a single 750 Vacuum secondary.  This FE is a bit more healthy than the 383.
Anyone run one, good, bad, ugly? Based on the specs I think I am fine. I deadheaded the GM, and likely will do the same on this one for now.

One thing to take note of: dielectric grease does not conduct electricity; it is an insulator. Many people do not realize this. Most of the time it is a non-issue. However, if you gobbed it into the boot, well it could be. If all your other tests and checks fail, I may try cleaning out the boots.

You sure there is not a resistor down stream you are bypassing in your testing? Seems I remember old Fords did things like this.....if bench testing all parts I could see that being an issue.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Detroit Lockers
« on: June 16, 2025, 04:33:41 PM »
I am thinking the Nascar variant is a tad different than a traditional Detroit Locker. At least from what I am seeing on the google. That may, or may not, explain the reasoning for different actions. Detroit Lockers have been known far and wide for strength as long as they are fully locked. Neither is to be confused with a "lunch box" locker. I am running one of those in a Dana 60 rear, and to date it has done fine. That is far from drag strip abuse though.

For the OP, if you still have questions, maybe call their tech line. As pricey as they are I would make certain before investing.

FE Technical Forum / Re: 390 FE for my 76 F250
« on: June 05, 2025, 03:21:18 PM »
I have the book(great stuff) but for this purpose would still recommend the RPM over the Perf. 390. I ran both on my Highboy. D2 heads, long tubes, Comp Cam Xtreme Energy 218/224 Hydraulic Flat Tappet. I ran both 650 and 750 carbs on that rig, with both intakes. At initial tip in throttle, yes the smaller intake did better, the smaller carb...maybe even so marginally.  However, it fell flat quickly vs. comparing to the RPM intake. Granted those trucks run 4:10 gear and most of the time you are never under 2,000 RPM. Plus, more was done than stock engine.
My point being that drivability encompasses the whole set up and performance will vary depending on the entire picture. In this case I would say the gear ratio/operating range favor the RPM Intake. Pretty easy to tell and feel when we did our little 0-60 shoot outs.  Based on all of that it was RPM and 750VS.
Sad that a 1975  FE pulled a camper and ATV notably better than a 2003 F250 V10. Stopping, well that was a win to the 2003 model  :)

Like previously asked.....if the motor is not shot that is in the truck, then a 360 can absolutely be made to run well. Especially if it is the OEM one. Long Tube Hedders, RPM intake, and a cam swap. I did it to mine and it went from turd to whipping the pants off my 2003 F250 V10. To top it off the motor was on her last leg. I can only imagine how it would have been with fresh heads, correct springs etc.
Nothing is cheap about a rebuild.

I am late to the party but here is my guess:

Transmission- $2,500 if a shop $1,000 if you do it and no crazy issues involved.
T-Case- $750-$1000 Shop, $400 you do it
Motor- $7,800 stockish rebuild add $800 if you go roller set up. At a shop. At home maybe shave $2,000 off that. Depends on parts, and head work, etc. A lot of variables.

I can tell you I just build a 383 SBC with Aluminum upper end with roller cam and lifters and I am +$7,500 in it with me doing the work. That was late 2023 early 2024.  That is Carb to oil pan.

Assuming you got a custom grind cam, and/or likely from Comp....be certain to check the cam bolt thread pitch. Comp can, and does, swap cores and the thread pitch can differ from OEM.
There is no data, no nothing....you are just expected to know this. At least this is how it was circa 2016.

Maybe a little late but I would look hard at a Prime Weld Machine or CK. I bought the Prime Weld Tig225 and it will do about anything you would ever want to and the price is very reasonable. They are good machines and use CK torch/lead and quality parts.
I will say as a novice, the knobs and settings re a bit more complicated than a machine that has auto adjust but you are getting a lot of machine for the money capability wise. I found pulse to be awesome doing some 1/8" AL boxes. Another machine is CK Worldwide. From a lot of research I feel like for the money both of these are machines that were affordable to a hobbyist, but yet as capable as about any pro would need.  Attached some links that may help.

Is the block plate installed? There should not be any shimming needed and Rob Mc Stuff fits good and as the FE Block plate is what aligns the starter.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Lean Idle
« on: August 05, 2024, 11:58:08 AM »
Sorry for the late response. When I stated secondaries were closed, I meant they are in spec on adjustment, just to clarify. The truck idles fine, is fine. Timing is good. All settings dialed right in, were normal, and responsive. Steady 800 RPM, 750 RPM or so in gear. No indications of anything amiss.

I only mentioned the AF meter as a possible way to verify the data vs. smell. The truck has only been idled around the driveway/in and out of the garage.  I am only bringing this up because it is odd to me. One would think if it is acting right then ignore it, but man....it smells. Water temp solid, oil pressure solid, purrs, cranks, throttle response(unloaded) is great.....just a stinker.  Very well could be that all is fine and it is a by product of not being ran. I will take the stuff into consideration. Just making sure there may not be a smoking gun before I take it out on the first shake down run.

Holley 750 Vacuum Second. List 80508S. I converted it from a meter plate to screw in jets. Stock 72 in front, rear is 77.
445 Stroker, RPM intake, custom Lykins Roller Cam and BBM heads.

I have not ran the truck down the road at speed but I have ran it a lot moving it, letting it run etc. It runs fine as far the how.....however, the emissions are obnoxious! Very very strong which indicates to me it is lean at idle. Again, runs fine, wraps up fine(no load), in temp range, no issues but terrible eye burning smell.
Adjusted with in specs etc.....think I am at 1.75 turns out maybe 2. Secondaries are closed as they should be.

Question: Is there any reason it would be running so lean? Without checking with 02 it is a guess but when I say she will burn your eyes, I mean it. Seems I remember something about these not being the best out of the box and needed some help. Anyway, just want to ask in case others have ran into similar.

I am not sure why all the surprise. We should all have known this was, or is, coming. Home values up 35-50% in less than five years. A truck is now $70,000. Food, etc. double. Building materials...up 50%. Insurance is a business model, and they have to make money. When inflation hits, it hits them as well and that is passed on to the payers...i.e. us. Best advice I can give is shop it. I have had good luck with a broker. Also keep in mind that with insane inflation that means deductibles should rise equally. 500 is now 1,000 etc. With that, one would think it would keep the playing field somewhat level with simply increasing your deductible, but it won't.
Now if you want to be real upset...let us talk taxes! Their 20% is now a bigger dollar value simply based on rising cost. We are not going to see any help from that.
Like MStang said, the auto side is a racquet in itself.
I for one do not advocate for not having insurance. You may go on for years not needing it, but the one time you do need it for a major event it can really impact your livelihood.  Work it so it works for you but things are way to pricey if you do not have the money set aside to replace it. Just my .02 that is now .06 or is .0001....guess it depends.

I feel like there was some bad choices on cam and head work in that deal. Maybe there is a reason they did not choose a different cam.......Idk....but talk about leaving it on the table.
