One more take away from RMRW 2020 2.0 and probably DW too
« on: September 18, 2020, 09:17:29 AM »
There seems to be more, how should I put this, rolling pieces of crap at these events. There were a lot of very nice cars there put each time I go I see more crappy cars especially among the LS crowd. Not just body and paint but the way they are put together. Do people no longer take any pride in their workmanship? I think Hot Rod's "Road Kill" has something to do with.

Roadkill has a lot to do with it. And I also think it's just the mentality these days of Rat Rod, Roadkill and being the "odd" one. A lot of guys are just looking to get on video with the crappiest car that looks like it won't survive. And 1320 Video is happy to put them on. I won't go into my dislike of those guys. There were a few cool cars there that you will NEVER see on video, just like on DW.

I'm to the point that if I see an LS in something, I walk away. I don't care about the car then. Seen it a millions times already.

I have told people there are 4 good ways to get noticed at DW. Be incredibly fast, break a lot of parts, have a rolling piece of crap or have an LS swapped whatever. I agree, I just walk away too.

It’ll be interesting to see how Godzilla affects all that.
Alan it’s great that you get out and do it. Congrats.

Shrugging my shoulders.....I get what you all are saying but I think anyone contributing by being there and doing these things is a GOOD thing. As long as the "junk" is safe.  If people are not involved then these hobbies die.  I like cars, period and there is way less participation from younger folks in this area.  The youth is what drives it and we are losing it in my opinion.  Now for me and mine I likely created a monster buy redoing an 84 C10 for my sons first truck. It was cheaper than buying something more modern, and he absolutely loves it and all the comments on it.  Time will tell but I feel he is hooked and will tinker with cars in his adult life.

The LS is a killer platform, not matter what you can't take anything away from it. The only reason Ford guys tend to hate on them is they make power and can do it for way less $$$.  If it was a FORD then Chevy guys would feel the same. It is comical.  Money is tight these days and that plays a huge factor in finishing cars.  I think a lot of people realize putting 15K in a 5K car is not wise so hence the junk.  Or you could be like me and have 20K in a 5K dollar truck HAHA.  Anyway, that is just my .02 for what it is worth with the point being we are all in it together, no people, no event, no fun.

One more thing about RMRW. When I went and turned in my time slip, route pictures and told them I was out I had not even gotten back to my car when the event organizer wheels up on his golf cart asking me what happened, offered his condolences, thanked me for coming out and gave me a ride back to my car. I thought that was pretty nice of him and something I never expected.

I was intending on catching some of your runs Alan. I was on vacation earlier this week and logged on to the live stream every day when it was opened, but I don't sit still very well. Sorry about your engine, will be interested to see the autopsy.

I agree that the LS swap thing is over-done, but so was the gen I SBC swaps. And as time passes new trends pop-up or are re-invented. The RatRod thing started as a homage to the traditional hotrod but what has been missed by a lot of guys my age or younger is that real hotrods didn't look like they did in 1949 because it was cool, it was simply all they could afford. And it's turned into something else entirely.

I don't think RoadKill is all bad, but it's being pushed in a direction I don't think was ever the original intent because it's where the money is. It's one of the few corporate car shows I'll even bother watching.

I'm not a fan of absolute garbage passed off as something cool. But not all my stuff has shiney paint on it either. I can't afford to do a frame off, perfect resto on EVERYTHING I have. Some of the stuff is good enough and allows me to have a lot more stuff on the road.

LS/Chevy swaps in general are just not my thing, even tho I have done them for others and I understand why. All of my stuff, even the swapped stuff, usually stays brand specific (diesel/big truck stuff is the exception in my case). Walking by a Ford and seeing anything else powering it just ruins the whole package for me. Kinda like road construction flaggers - from a distance they look hot and when you get close they're not!

To each their own.

Well then RustyCrankshaft drove 400+ miles down to my place in Brookings and we had a good but abbreviated talk since he had to drive back To the Seattle area.
I'm a regular on HAMB  and don't deal with anything LS. But I've had at least 4 solid axle Vettes and one 66 Vette so I'm familiar with the 327SBC. It's an easy engine to work on but it is a belly button motor. HAMB is Traditional Only cars before 1965, no "rat rods", independent front/rear suspension and no turbo charging.
I maintain a Latham Supercharger registry on HAMB, since I've had at least one since 1974. They are distinct and kind of rare , only 650 built
Built my 31 Model A with a SBC but switched to a 289 before going to Memphis in 1975.
I'm totally devoted to FE's now, but if I changed engine family's it would be to the Y-Block platform
2 photo's one of my 31 Slant window 4dr. in 1975 Memphis and one of my plans for my 48 Lincoln Continental that's currently getting a FE.

I wouldn't even have a problem if you went to "the dark side" and put an MEL in that 48 Lincoln.  :)
