floor for my66 Comet?
« on: January 09, 2013, 12:18:25 PM »
I have three options #1 steel 19 gauge obviously lighter than #2 18 gauge , stronger but I am installing floor supports, tunnel supports and a 14 point chro-mo cage anyhow or #3 aluminum I am after the light weight option but with no stated weight on any of the offering available how much can I save and is it worth the sacrifice in strength?

most effectiv way to save wheight is skip the
milk and cokies ;D it saves more wheight
than having a flimsy floor
How are you going to use the car
Fighting for the top megabuck price money
then its worth it

I dont remember the gauges and stuf
but most stock floors are 1-1.25 mm
steel wheights 8 kg/square meter/mm
and you use about 3-4 sq/m on a car total wheight
on a floor about 25-30 kg 50 60 lbs its like a 65 ah
battery
going down to 0.75 mm saves you 6-8 kg ( about12-17 lbs)
but the you need more bracing
aluminium saves you maby 15 kg (30lbs )
try to get ass much beads in the floor ass posible
instead of extra bracing
I have seen many thin floors braced with sqaretube
so they where way heavier than a stock floor
no rearseat? the floor behind fronseat is just wind protection
and dont bolt the seats to the floor
I have built a few racecars  and in the end i used 1mm steel
easier to work with easier to weld cheaper than alu
put that extra money on lighter rims instead
you gain more there
skip milk and cookies and take a real big dump before the race

If it is only twenty pounds I'll go with the the steel 18 gauge and take the rigidity over scratch weight. Originals were 19 gauge but being a monoque chassis I'll take the stiffer option. I am going with rolled preformed panels for ease over making my own.

I think that's a good choice, going to thinner floor panels is not going to save a lot of weight, and structural integrity counts.

And make sure your seats are bolted
to some sturdy braces no point having
seatbelts if the seat comes loose
seen people get killed that way

That will all go to the cage floor plates.

I've built a number of drag cars over the years and whenever I install a roll cage, belts or whatever, I do it with the thought in mind that somebody is going to test my work someday.  I've seen rollbars made of exhaust tubing which would fold over and kill the driver if the car goes on it's lid.  I've seen bungee cords holding batteries in place and all kinds of things that would cause mayhem in a crash.  This video has been around a while but it shows how NOT to build a car.

Exactly what I am trying to avoid I am building with the idea ask if you don't know. I am talking with each vendor and racers like you every step along the and drawing on my own experience also. I would hate to injure or kill someone else due to my omissions or being cheap.
