TRW pin locks..
« on: March 10, 2020, 11:08:39 AM »
Does anyone have a part# for SpiroLox or clips for TRW pistons? I'm guessing they are factory size locks. I just don't have a set of pistons in front of me to measure the clip groove. Thanks.

   Fred,
You need to be careful as TRW typically used a tru-arc lock that was .052 wide. "Industry standard" is .042 wide , same for spirolocks. Using the wrong lock WILL  create too much end float on the pin and damage the lock or piston and have the pin dragging the wall and potentially break the piston. With TRW being gone, you may have to try and find original Ford locks. Just make sure they measure .052 wide.

Thanks, Randy. I'll see what I can find.  Finding info on these old pistons is tough.

I used spirlox on my TRW's and never had a problem.  I admit though that I never measured them I just ordered what was listed in the parts book.  I still have a set new I can dig out the bix for the part number.

DO NOT USE TRU ARC! Use Spirolocs.  I have seen many come out and destroy cylinder walls.   I have dual Spirolocs in the JE pistons on each side. I had them milled to make removal easier. What a pain in the arse!

Keith is correct , True arcs do not like RPM. The "eyelet" breaks off right at the thinnest point. If one falls out , it's because it wasn't installed correctly. Ford has used them forever in the FE and millions survived. The "sharper edge" of the lock MUST be installed facing the outside of the piston , this secures it in the groove. If the rounded edge is installed outward , the lock has a tendency to "jump out". As I cautioned , use of a different width lock WILL cause a failure. End play on a True arc OR Spirolock WILL cause a failure. .010 is MAXIMUM allowable.
Ford/TRW/Sealed Power FE pistons are designed to use a .050-.052 lock and Winr1 has provided links to obtain them. Continuous operation /drag racing above 7,000 RPM "could" and has caused True arc failure.
