Jill Poke
« on: June 16, 2019, 11:12:54 PM »
I thought I knew about old cars but was surprised to see a Ford Model S at a show and see a pole dragging the ground underneath it. It's called a Jill Poke... Google that... wait, you can't. The guy the writes the internet doesn't even know.
But since Teslas suffer from the rollback problem maybe the idea needs to be revived.

Car was just like this one, red too. But this doesn't have the Jill Poke hanging down.

Seems red was on most of the 3750 S's built between 1907 and 1909.

That's interesting, we used the term in the log woods to reference any stick/limb that damaged your log truck. Usually occurred in a turn around. I had no clue that's where it originated from.

I knew, but my dad was into Edwardian era cars. Tom, a few years back, there was a 3-part documentary on the Knowledge network where these guys re-created the 1907 Peking-Paris race in the appropriate cars. It was pretty cool, and quite the ordeal.

Wikipedia link about the Peking-Paris race, with some info about the television documentary part way down the page under the heading "2005".

David Cohen also ran it in a Model A. He used to have a GT40 and a 289 Cobra.

A variant was used here on the horse sledges they used to haul lumber out from the forest
in the winter. They watered the sledge tracks on the base roads to be able to take big loads.
But then they needed som form of brake in the hills. Here it is called  Skurjärn

My father in law told me,wifes grandfather had North Swedish workhorses whole his life.
He lived at the foot of a mountin there was a road up that mountin were he so to speak dynoed
the horses.  When he finaly bougt a car in the 60s he had to test it up that road, he gave my F,I,L
a piece of a log and said ride with me and jump out and throw it behind the wheel when it stops,
so it dont roll down the hill ;D ;D

Tom....David Cohen's Cobra and GT40 were purchased by the same fellow...He took both cars..David has a huge collection.I know his brother Ray and used to look after his collection (much smaller)..

I also know the owner's of the Model S and have to admit I was unaware of those cars as well...Cool option...
