Anybody put a E$od in a 63?
« on: February 12, 2019, 11:37:41 AM »
Ok
Looking for options and wanted to know if anyone has installed a E4OD in a 63.
I don't mind buying an adapter and controller but don't want to cut my tunnel to much.

Never installed one in a 63 but overhauled a bunch of E4OD over the years and it sure is big , if you don't have mega power a AOD style 4R70 and 75 are pretty stout and much smaller than E4OD , you would still have the adapter and controller to deal with

I should be putting out about 450 HP and I wasn't sure if a aod or a 4r70 would hold up.

I gave up on the idea when I put the E4OD next to the C6. Definitely need transmission tunnel work.

I wasn't sure how much bigger the E4OD was compared to the C6. That is why I was asking.
I really don't want to modify my tunnel. One of the reason I bought this car was because it needed no body work.
My Ranchero ruined me for doing rust repair and bodywork.

Yes I agree.
So a new question, Has anybody has success with a 4r70 handling Horsepower.
How reliable are they on the street with 10 or 12 trips to the strip every year?

4R70/75 should be fine … AOD would need a real good build , 4R70 you could throw in there

Good to know.
A friend of mine has a salvage yard and the tranny is free. So I will just have to shell out $750.00 for the adapter and 500.00 for the controller and the rebuild kit.
Sounds like the way to go.

You're in GearVendor cost range; another possible option...

I looked at the gear venders but they were in the $3000.00 plus price range.
I searched on the net and the cheapest used one I found was 2600.00.
I can buy the adapter for $750, the controller for $500.00 and the master street-strip kit for 350.00.
I can rebuild the tranny myself so nothing in it but my time.
So I am looking at about $1900.00 plus any incidentals.
Will have to buy a driveshaft anyway as my car came without one. The original owner must not have checked the option list when he bought it.

I put a E40D wide-ratio gear kit in a C6 in my '62 before going to a manual.  I still had to cut up the cross member to clear the pan on the C6, but it did fit the tunnel a-ok.  The wide ratio kit was nice, got up and moving in a hurry.  If you're not hell-bent on that O.D. gear, a kit in a C6 could work for you.

Upfront, I know little about transmissions, so don't know if the below are complete/usable...

Quick Google search, 2 of the results:

I all ready have the wide ratio conversion in my C6. When I rebuilt it 2 years ago That is one of the things we upgraded. Just not sure if it will do what I want.

Thanks for the link. I checked it out and I would need a Doug Nash overdrive unit for it.
Would love to have a DN but don't know if I can find a unit to fit a C6 and how hard it would be to get replacement parts now.
The 2 I had in the 70's were great and never gave me any problems.

Is there an E4OD converter that works with 1.849 pilot?
