Rear main sealing
« on: November 26, 2018, 09:57:14 AM »
I have been told by people in the seal business that a small percentage of rear main lip seal conversion leaks are caused by variance in the seal cavity.  It is said that since a rope style seal was to be used the tolerance for the cavity was not held particularly close as it would not matter with the rope seal. I believe the number was around 8%. Does this theory hold water,or oil, sorry.

That makes sense.   in my Pontiac tripower I converted it to a lip seal but the seal was made specifically for that purpose.   is there maybe such a seal for an FE ?

You can get rope or rubber seals for the FE

I get the Felpro seal kits. Trick I use is to stager the seals so that they don`t line up with the parting line and a very small dab of sealer on the ends. Haven't had a leak yet.
