FE in a 77 F150 4X4
« on: September 27, 2018, 08:06:40 AM »
We are planning to swap engines in a 77 F 150 4x4 435 4 speed, the truck currently has a 302, the 390 we want to put in the truck came out of my 66 Fairlane. Are the cross members different from 76 to 77, will we need a different oil pan for a 4x4. All input and suggestions will help, thank you.

76 and 77 model years were virtually identical.  The crossmembers should be the same.  My '76 F-250 has a 390 in it.  Great motor for that truck.

There should be no crossmember in the mix on a 4x4.  You just need the correct frame perches and mounts that come from the frame rails

Yes you will need a 4x4 oil pan and pickup, they are rear sump.  A front sump would be directly over the axle

Remember that the 1976 FE 4X4 had the angled oil filter adapter and they are kind of hard to find. Not sure if a 77 would have the same issue. I haven't looked to see if the PU adapter or car adapter would fit. I don't have a 1976 4X4 PU to check the fitment.
