m.p.g.?
« on: August 10, 2017, 06:39:51 PM »
Just made a "scientific" run to the Paradox Valley and back - exactly 13 miles per gallon over 110 miles of mixed back road driving with *several* third and fourth gear pulls.  Pretty good?  How does your FE compare?

Shoot that's pretty good man! I'm getting about 9mpg in my 463 powered 67 galaxie, and about 3mpg when I "drive" it.  ;D

I took the camera but didn't film for even a second...this drive was pure self indulgence.  The sound of the side dump 3" exhaust is intoxicating, traffic was light, cool temps, great scenery.  Smiles indeed.

MPG?   Don't really know as my '69 F100 is missing the speedo cable.  I smile when I drive it, just kinda cringe when I have to pull in and fill it up.....again.  428CJ, 2x4, 4spd, 4.546 gears.  Not a good "mileage" combination.

Now the blower car, when I ran 600's on it, would get pretty decent mileage.  I drove it 160 miles round trip to Thompson Raceway a few years back.  I was pleasantly surprised when it made the trip without filling up(4 spd/3.89 gears).  Since I put the 660's on it, well, it's not so good anymore.  On well.

13 mpg x 20 gallons gives me 260 miles of theoretical range.  Not a Prius, but not bad for an 8.0L engine with no overdrive.

Best I ever got was 16 out of my '68 F250 Highboy, but that was fresh out of a rebuild with pretty ideal driving conditions (flat highway miles). It had a solid lifter 390, mild build with a 750 Holley and stock S intake. That was with a verified speedometer accuracy. My Galaxie gets about 13-14 in the same conditions, automatic with stock original untouched 390 with dual exhaust being the only upgrade. My Mustang? I don't check it. Don't care either ;D

Driving style has a LOT to do with the results you get. I have friends who could cut that mileage in half, driving the same car on the same stretch of road.

If you think your FE powered car doesn't get good gas mileage just buy a motorhome and drive it a little. My V10 gas motorhome got 8 mpg once downwind and I thought that was good!
It can suck a 75 gallon tank dry in 375 miles when towing.

That's pretty good for a lot of cubes. This is with the FiTech? Paradox Valley in southwestern CO?

The 416 in my Highboy has been averaging 9mpg with a 750 vac secondary carb.  That's with a 2500 foot elevation change to and from work.

LOL. make you not worry about it - F350 7.5L gas + 34' trailer = 6.8 MPG.  Dual 18 gallon tanks, switch tanks at 90 miles.   8)

Ya, my '96 F350/460/auto/4.10 got 7 mpg pulling my 14K trailer.  My V10 got 9 mpg, the PSD got 12 mpg.  My Mack is around 8 mpg.

i drove my 66 comet 390 4 speed,3.25 gear to the beach years ago and my friend followed me in his 350 chevyII and he used 5 dollars more gas than i did getting there.back then gas was less than 1 dollar a gallon so he used quiet a bit more than i did,and i was breaking in a new 390 so i ran it at different speeds and kicked the 4 barrel in several times too

I want to make a tank to put in the back of my '70 F350 that I pull my 28' trailer with. Something that I can tie into the main cab tank with a short line and valve and refill it as I'm going down the road. It'd actually save me money as well, because gas is always quite a bit cheaper near me than anywhere on the road.
