help on smoking issue
« on: May 02, 2017, 01:16:04 PM »
i have a 428 with 2000 miles on it,ran great,cj heads,pi intake, hooker, msd, comp cam, with no issues.i just changed the heads, intake and rockers to bbm heads, rpm intake and harland sharp rockers with end stands.after install im smoking bad at startup and trickles at idle and im down a little on my oil pressure compaired to before the swap.i noticed my end stands were touching my arp head bolts.i used felpro head gaskets and i forgot to check the tab to see if it needed bent down.i have a pcv hooked up and its pulling vac.could it be sucking oil, could the head gasket tabs be the problem,or could the end stands touching the head bolts be the problem.anyone have any ideas before i try my stock rockers,or pull the intake to check the tabs?

If you suspect the pcv, then pull the pcv valve out of the valve cover and see if it makes a difference.  You could also pull the valve covers and look at the seam where the intake and head meet. Look at the gasket for something there. If you really want to get involved pull the carb and rocker assembly from both sides. Make a plate to cover the carb and block off all the vacuum ports. Then pull a vacuum and see if it holds. If your lucky you might hear something.

i unpluged the pvc,no effect on the smoking.i cant hear good,so i dought i hear anything. i dont care to take the intake off if i thought i had a bad seal, and im worried about the oil pressure drop.it was 75 at start up now its 60,and when it warms up its 25-30 at idle,it was near 50 warmed up at idle

Did the previous set of heads have oil restrictors installed? Maybe your flooding the valvetrain.

i did have restrictors in my cj heads, but i dont know what to do if im flooding the valve train on the bbm heads, the inserts in the bolt holes threads are sticking up and you cant get a carb jet in the hole

If you look at my thread (Intake manifold issues (Oil pooling on valves)), we may be chasing the same problem.  My intake is off, and I am leaning towards the head gaskets tabs as the cause.

Jeff, let me know if that fixes yours.im thinking either tabs on my heads,or the hs rockers or end stands

I put oil on mine so I get a more accurate torque reading with my torque wrench.

You should go with the head mfg's recommendation for torque values and lube, or use ARPs notes.  Not sure about an FE, but for sure the AFD heads on my 351C required thread seal on the intake rocker studs because the holes penetrated the intake port.

Seems to me that the FE has real issues with intake sealing - not that other Ford motors don't LOL.  But the FE head/intake seal area being under the valve cover makes it more critical.  It'd look at the plugs to see if it was just a couple of cylinders causing the trouble, that would point to either an intake port or possibly a problem with the intake valve seal on that cylinder.
