what transmission and parts do I need?

I am nearly finished building my FE. It is a stroked 390 to 437 cid. It has a roller cam and dual quads.

 I am thinking I want a TKO600 with a .64 final drive with the limited knowledge I have so far.

 My questions are:

 What should my bell housing of choice be?
 What clutch set up?
 Which transmission? i.e. part #
 what spline?
 short shaft or long?
 Where do I want to shifter to be placed?

 I NEVER race. I do drive quickly at times. I do a lot of long road trips with my bride. safety is priority.

1.  Quicktime.  Depending on what your vehicle is, you may want to go with a shortened input shaft so that you can use a Toploader depth bellhousing.  This will put the shifter back in the correct spot if your car was originally equipped with a Toploader.

2.  McLeod or RAM.  11" Long is what I push the most for older factory cars.  The clutch kit itself will depend on how much horsepower the engine is making.

3.  Don't always assume that you will need the highest overdrive ratio.  Depending on your camshaft, tire size, rearend gears, and where you'll be doing your most driving, the .82 may be the best choice.  FWIW, I RARELY sell .64 OD transmissions.

5.  This depends on what vehicle it is.  The stock position on a TKO will turn 180°, which will push the shifter about 3" further to the front.  There are myriads of shifter handles available from Hurst that will put the handle pretty much anywhere you want it.

The shifter position isn't important but getting parts when required is. Is my thinking that the long shaft is more common and easier to find?

My wife and I do a lot of long haul road trips so we are on the highway most of the time. Based on the torque range of my cam, my gears and my tire size I am thinking .64 is where I would be most comfortable at 80 mph.

The short shafts are not harder to find, but just take an extra couple days to install the input shaft. 

Can you post up your cam specs, rearend gears, and tire sizes?

Most of the transmissions I send out for Cobras are .82 OD.

Brent supplied the TKO 600 for my 68..It has the shortened input shaft and I use the stock bellhousing..I also use the .82 5th gear...As well I use the 11" long style Mcleod clutch.The 66,67 and 68 all use the same clutch.

I wanted 5th in the trans not a go to sleep overdrive..

with that tire and rear gear and a .64 o d your gonna be above 1750 rpm by 400 or more rpm to be at 75 mph , and your 3.73 s will become 2.38 or round up to 2.39 s how ever you want to look at it . Your motor is gonna like a few more rpm s as well ,, jmo  Bud

I double checked your number s on the conkalator , 2250 rpm with 3.73 s , 26.6 inch tall tire at 75 is 74.336 mph , not to argue but just try n to help .. go to csgnetwork.com and play with your gear figures ,, Bud

At 2000 rpm with a 3.73 gear, .64 OD, and a 295/50-15 tire, you'd be at 66 mph.  At 2200 rpm, you'd be at 75. 

If that's where you do all of your driving, that would be just fine.  However, if you spend time at 55, you'd only be at around 1700 and I think you may start to get a little bucking there.  Your cam isn't too big for the size engine you have, but it's not small either. 

If you did the .82 OD, you'd be at 2900 rpm at 75 mph.

Cobraii you need to call Brent Lykins and let him spec out what you need.
He supplied all my clutch set up and the TKO 600 for my 66 Fairlane.
You won't find it cheaper anywhere else and you won't find a nicer guy to deal with.

I'd listen closely to what Brent is saying as at too low an rpm at say 55 mph the engine will buck, not a good thing. But if you do drive at say 75 mph that 2,200 rpms sounds very good.
