« on: January 11, 2017, 12:31:59 PM »
I need a spark plug recommendation for my 482 running BBM heads, Comp292H, Edelbrock RPM, 850 DP, 6200 redline, 3800lb 4sp street car.
Thanks in advance!

If it's around 10-10.5:1 compression, I'd run an Autolite 3924.

10.5:1.  I assume they will fit the heads?

Yes, I wouldn't recommend a plug that wouldn't fit.

I had to ask because I have no experience with these BBM heads and I thought I read somewhere that they require a different plug than the factory heads.  I'm trying to fatten up my order from Summit to get free shipping and I hate to return things via mail order.  Plus, I'm am idiot!   :P
Thanks for the advice!

You are correct, the factory Ford cast iron FE cylinder heads use a 18mm thread spark plug. I believe most, if not all, aftermarket aluminum FE cylinder heads ( like BBM, Edelbrock, etc. ) use a 14mm thread spark plug. Since the 14mm spark plug is common on the aftermarket heads I think the builders are just used to that now, nothing wrong with the question. There are a lot more varieties of plugs available in the 14mm size.

Comment based on 'way-back-when'. '32' heat range was the thing to use on any street-driven performance Ford. The regular stuff used an '82'. And a '22' was good for about ten street miles before it started to foul noticeably. There are easily-found charts that give a cross-reference that'll give you a start. And keep in mind that improvements in plugs will be likely to offer a broader operational heat range.

Didn't mean to come across as snippy as I did.  Sorry for that.

No problem, getting answers from a professional engine builder with a reputation as good as yours is great, and I appreciate it!

I used to date a gal whose father had a spark plug collection.  He had hundreds of them, all different designs, many with literature making all sorts of claims of their superiority to "standard" plugs.  Some of them were over a hundred years old.  It's always fun to see the latest, greatest spark plug design but, in the end, I'll stick with conventional plugs.  Cheers!
