Sell, Scrap, or Donate Questions...
« on: November 27, 2015, 11:23:02 AM »
First - If I've violated rules by posting this way here - please delete - or let me know and I'll delete and change the title to something totally unrelated...

I need to clean out the garage and have some stuff that I've accumulated over time that I need to get rid of - and I need some advice as to how to proceed.  The Mrs. and I have made a deal regarding the purchase of a new compressor (well - new to me - but a biggie - 26+CFM @ 90) and it is contingent on cleaning out the parts corner of the garage.  My priorities are:
1) Don't scrap something that someone else would want / use...
2) Don't waste a ton of time trying to sell something that should be scrapped...
3) If I can get a bit of money out of some of this - and we both walk away happy - then that is the best case scenario for me...

So - I've got:
  • A couple of "390" blocks - D2TE and D3TE one is +.10 (I think) and bare - the other is a complete short block with flat-tops and is either +.30 or +.40 with healthy amounts of rust in the bores above the pistons.
  • A couple of sets of bare FE heads - one set of C6AE (I think) and some other basic stuff - nothing exotic
  • The Cruisomatic out of my '65 (replaced with a C6) - shifted just fine when pulled but leaks like the Exxon Valdez
  • A box full of "rare and valuable" early SBF parts that were given to me by a friend who was moving - after they were given to him by a friend who was moving...  Pulleys, brackets, and a 2V 289 manifold which is my second clue (the first clue is that I am the second person to be GIVEN this box o' stuff) that the "rare and valuable" tag might not be appropriate

So - am I right in thinking that the blocks and heads are not worth shipping and that unless I find a local taker I'm probably going to end up scrapping these (I HATE doing that - but I'm a packrat by nature who now has an incentive to make a space in the garage).  Thoughts? What would FE Power do?

And...  does anyone have a line on a good web resource for determining whether any of the pulleys, brackets, etc are worth something (or - at least wanted by folks doing resto work).  I've held on to this stuff because despite being 99% sure that it is junk - I get this nagging "if I scrap it I'm sure that I'll find out the next week that the bracket is the one that the guy restoring the KR mustang needed to complete his numbers matching concours restoration...

Anyway - any thoughts appreciated...

Nate, I'd...

-plug in the area you live in first.
-peruse the 'Net or E-bay for some ballpark prices to include here.
-specify if you will ship....or not, i.e. local pickup only.
-pictures help. Jay or others here can show you how to post them.
-what kind of Ford body and year did the 289 parts come from? A Sunbeam Tiger set-up is good, a run of the mill '65-68 Mustang....not so good.
Bets of luck!

Sorry - machomeman - answers below...

Phoenix AZ area (north of the city)

I've done a bit of searching on the web for the blocks etc and not found them to be terribly valuable.  I've not dug in deep on the box-o-parts... I know that I've found wildly conflicting information about the merits / values of FE parts and have learned to trust what I hear here - and to some degree the "other FE forum..." - so I was hoping for a "this site has trustworthy information on old SBF stuff..." sort of advice in that space.

I'd ship if something is worth shipping and the buyer wants to pay for it...  I'm working on the assumption that none of the "heavy stuff" (short-block - transmission - etc) is not worth shipping.

I'll post pics of the stuff that is "sell worthy."  There is a big enough pile that I did not want to ask for a detailed analysis by folks here on a bunch of parts.  Was mostly looking for "general" advice... :-)

Unfortunately - I don't have the first clue about what the SBF stuff came off of.  My hope was to find a couple of good sources of truth for this stuff and dig in to try to determine whether the part numbers matched a first gen GT350 - or a 1974 4 pot Pintostang...

Does that make sense?

Sure, it makes sense. Yet, many sources for FE parts are dried up...or totally gone. Think of it has helping a fellow FE'er!

This site is your pal: http://www.mustangtek.com/

As to SBF's, I do moderate the Net' 54 SBF site unde the same screen name and "Bob" : http://www.network54.com/Forum/119417

Pulley and front dress stuff are generally available yet some are unique to Shelbys, Cobras and Tigers.

Ok, I hate to throw stuff out too, I can sympathize, just my opinion here:

Blocks, like you guessed, probably not worth shipping and the rusty one already .030 over probably not worth keeping. Strip the main caps, bellhousing dowels, etc. and save. That said, I have been seeing guys on the internet crying for 390 cranks, so that might be worth saving from the short block. Also, I have a couple car buddies in Phoenix and I've been going down there for junkyard runs for decades now. My observation, up here in Minnesota the vehicles tended to rust away long before the engine went bad. It's pretty easy to still find whole standard bore 360-390's cheap here that were pulled before the vehicle was scrapped. In Phoenix the cars ( body & chassis ) hung around forever, but the engine died decades ago, often from the heat as well as the miles. There seems to be more of a demand for motors down there. Quite a few years ago I hauled a trailer full of complete 302's & 460's to Arizona and traded them off for parts. So you may find a market there.

Cylinder heads - you may have luck selling on the internet, especially the C6 and earlier heads.  They aren't worth much, but there seems to be buyers if the price is low to balance the shipping. Casting numbers and date codes are key on these, often it's for a restoration.

Small parts - years ago we tended to pass these by in the junkyard, looking instead for the CJ parts, Holley's, etc. Now the common stuff has been crushed and good luck finding a bracket or pulley. Barry and Blair I believe have been advertising for FE oil filter adaptors especially. The small stuff is easier to ship as well. I would clean off the brackets and pulleys, sometimes they have a I.D. number on them ( often corresponds to a part number ) and if you post them I can try looking in the Ford Parts book for you to figure out what it is. Sometimes the info is in there and I can figure out other applications like the musclecar stuff, sometimes I can't, but I'll try. And of course check with Bob's link too, easier if someone else has already figured it out.

Cruisomatic - sadly probably not much market, but I don't really know. C6's are getting so old tranny shops aren't even dealing with them, let alone Cruiso's. I had a local tranny shop here give me their leftover C6 hard parts 10 years ago since even then they hadn't worked on one in a few years. You might try looking around where you're at for any "old time" looking tranny shops, you know, those places in an old building that looks like they've been there forever and saved everything. They may not pay for it, but they might trade you some stuff you can use or credit for another day.

Great info... Thanks very much...  I'm in the mountains for the holiday weekend...  I'll clean up some of the small parts.  As to the tranny advice - I hadn't thought of bartering it - and your comment reminded me that the old trans shop that I have used for years just expanded a bay over and opened a hard parts business.  I'll bet they'll give me some sort of credit for it...
