I have one is a 63.5 Galaxie, so same basic setup.

I did not cut anything, tho it would be easier if I did.  I probably would have cut the floor just so I had plenty of room, but I'd JUST done a floor R&R with carpet etc and didn't want to tear it out again.  Of course my main mistake in setup, is I'm running a 429 engine which sits too high.  This makes for imperfect driveline angles, but otherwise functions decently.

I'll soon remedy this with an FE engine.

Here is a rear end/GV build thread on my car:
http://www.fordmuscleforums.com/makin-progress/553305-2013-progress-my-63-5-galaxie.html

As you can see in the thread above, I got tired of fussing with the crossmember and just went ahead and built my own.

That is what I'm saying Heo...
Due to the engine sitting high, I need to raise the GV to keep a perfect driveline angle.  I'd think with the engine lower it would be much easier.  I've just lived with an imperfect angle until I put an FE in the car.

No I didn't cut anything (if you click the link it shows what I did and didn't have to do for this project).

Read your fordmuscleforums thread from beginning to end...very informative.  I would v much like to have much more aggressive rear gearing to replace the AC-mandated 3.00:1 28-spline unit currently in the Cyclone, but the total cost of rear end upgrade + GV purchase is a significant deterrent.  I don't seem to have much luck finding affordable used units so, if it happens, am resigned to the brand-new route -- which won't be anytime soon.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience.

Mike, scour your local junkyards for Fleetwood RV's built in the late 80's early 90's.  If they have a 460 and c6, they came with a GV.  Good luck....  and yeah, 4.30:1 rear gears was easily the BEST upgrade I've made to the car.

I hammered the floor a little, it honestly didn't make a difference as I was unwilling to hit it hard enough to really force it up.  Was more just to gain an extra 1/4 inch.

Yes, the Gear Vendors is a remade Laycock De Normanville overdrive from behind a Volvo.
Those are smaller type J units.  The GV we run now is a Type P, which is considerably heavier duty.
I've known people to hunt down the older units, but I've also heard of them breaking behind fairly stock engines.

If ya wanna play, ya gotta pay, I'd buy a new one for another vehicle without hesitation.

Hey Drew, if you get a Milodon Street pan for your 460 you can lower the motor quite a bit. Instead of the rear of the pan sloping down to the sump. it is chopped more squarely. It worked well on my 66 Galaxie anyway. I don't know what that will do with your mounts, headers etc. I did not use a kit when I put the 521 in my car, I made my frame mounts(used 66 Galaxie FE insulators) and used '75 Torino 460 headers.  I am running a C6/GV also.

Yeah, Alan, if I had decided to keep the engine I would have done that.  I remember you had a fantastic post showing the oil pans etc.  For whatever reason, I just needed to build an FE for the ole Gal, so it doesn't matter at this point.

I love the 429, it is a fantastic engine, but fitment wise and for originality sake it just wasn't working in the car.  I'll most likely stick it in my truck, it'll do just fine there :P

I did have to cut the floor to make the GV overdrive fit in my 64 Galaxie, and get the driveshaft angle right.  Its funny that on my Mustangs, no surgery on the floor was necessary, but on the 64 Galaxie it was.

Just as an FYI, I did ask the Gear Vendors reps while I was at Dragweek if they had parts & repair services for the Laycock OD's and they said they did for most, some would need updating on certain components.
