fe main girdle

I was wondering if anyone was running a main girdle on their fe. I saw one listed on eBay that looked like a good value for what you get. Description says minor machining to the caps is required and line hone is recommended. Would the pan rail need to be machined flat as well? Seems like it would keep the caps from moving around. Its probably not as strong as cross bolting but should be easier and cheaper.

Yes, I run the one from Tim Oelerich. I have it coupled with crossbolts. Before the crossbolting I used just the girdle. Since it was already on the block I had my machinist setup the Pro-Gram caps and continue using the girdle also. Getting ready for another for a Centerolier block with billet caps as well. Very nice sturdy piece with alot thought put into it.

My 432 stroker has one because the block came with it. Barry has posted on the other forum that the rails do need to be squared as well, and that by the time you are done with all of the machining you could have crossbolted the block. Still, there are a lot of guys that swear by it without touching the rails, and I'm surely not going to remove it from my block that is already done.

I believe Barry R provided the details of installing a girdle. What looks easy is very time consuming, requires detailed machine work and ends up very costly.

Thanks for the input and the link guys. After reading what Barry and Blair had to say, seems like there would be about a grand in machining. That and the cost of the girdle would go a long way to one of those new bbm blocks.

Here's a link to a current Ebay auction for the girdle. Just FYI.
