482 tunnelport pick up
« on: August 02, 2014, 11:16:53 AM »
Heading out this morning to BC for short holiday and on to Washington state to pick my 482 ,after a few small set backs the build is finally done. Scheduled for the Dyno for wednesday down in Seattle and bringing  it back to drop in my 40 Ford next weekend. Hopefully all goes well and it makes the 600 hp that we were building for. New Bear iron block ,steel 4. 250 Scat crank,Diamond flat tops, aluminum Dove tunnelports and tunnelport dual plane quad intake . My S/O shit the bed about a year ago to the day and has been a long and boring summer with my 40 sitting in the garage with an empty engine bay. will take some pictures and film to document the run and one day figure out how to post it. Have alot of money wrap up in this build,so lets hope the dyno goes as planned and no problems getting it back to Canada. wish me luck, Konrad from Alberta

Oh, you mean you are picking it up.
I was honestly thinking, "gee, ya know, I need a pickup truck with a 482 tunnelport engine.... yeah, that would be nice."

Good luck on the dyno, Konrad!  Looking forward to seeing the test results and some pictures...

Good luck, Konrad. I hope your dyno day goes well and the border guards don't confiscate your 'weapon' upon re-entry into the country ;)

Got back late last night, with my 482 tunnelport. Crossing the border was crazy, they went thought my whole truck to check if I was smuggling anything illegal. First I want to say the BBM block is a winner, cost to machine 350 bucks, no decking or alignment bore. Just a straight block with no sealing issues. A matter of fact the dyno shop had just built a 496 fe stroker using a Pond aluminum block the required almost 1900.00 of machine work just to use the block. Let just say they where not impressed.Any how got the engine in the back of my truck and going over to my buddy's to drop it off ,so we can get it back in my 40 this week. Now the dyno said we made 544 at 5200 and 560 torque on 92 pump. We are trying to figure out why the cam stop building power at 5200 rpm. There are a few things like my old Harland Sharpe's are worn and need replacing and the carbs need to drop 4 sizes on the jet plates on the secondary side, or maybe we missed the cam altogether. Its a Oregan cam custom grind mech. roller to go with my 10.5 compression diamonds flat tops that Ken recommended. makes alot torque down low but i was hoping the cam would build power to at least 6200 rpm. more to follow as I will get futher into cam specs and Dyno numbers. But I feel that there more potential power to be had from this engine. Not disappointed but hoped for alittle more. At least we didnt hurt it or kill it on dyno. Konrad from Alberta, good to be back home

Do you have some horsepower graphs or other dyno data that you can share?  It is confusing why the power dropped off after 5200; it shouldn't have done that...

How big a cam is it? A Tunnel Port should start making power at 5200 not stop.

Good to hear the block is nice.

Be interesting to see the dyno data, cam and head specs.  Probably could figure something out from that.

No way did anybody spend $1900 prepping a Pond block just to get it to work.  Probably just some frustrated comment.  I have done literally dozens of Pond blocks and Robert sells a good piece at a fair price - and takes care of his customers.  Just needed to point that out.

I got Konrad's dyno sheets, and his engine is running, way, way rich.  A/Fs in the high 10s and low 11s.  I think he can pick up 40-50 horsepower with some carb tuning.

Peak powered occurred at 5200, but this was also where the engine was closest to correct at A/F, around 11.2:1.  It got richer as RPM increased, but didn't drop off a lot in horsepower, only around 10 or so.

I will try to post the dyno sheets later if I get the opportunity - Jay

Thank you Jay for your input, very helpful and kinda confirmed what i thought. Not real easy to find secondary jet plates here and want to tune it for the weeend. Got engine dropped in last night and back tonight to hook it up and get it running if we can find all the fasteners, it been close to year since it came out. didn't know if this crazy but I talked to a guy who said JB weld the jet offices closed and redrill them to what you want.does this sound crazy or would it work.

Don't use JB Weld in the metering block!  That is just asking for trouble.  I have used it in ports with good success when cleaned properly, and roughed up, or staked, but eventually it deteriorates some.  In a carb where fuel sits all the time, it would soften quickly and become a mess.  You can buy jets in packs of 4, or in sets, or complete boxes of sizes from most parts houses.  I you need the plates, they should be available, also.  "Anything worth doing, is worth doing right."  Joe-JDC.

Feel kinda dumb, plates are on the primary side, jets are on the secondary side. oops.My buddy look at me like i was a retard when told him i was looking for plates for the secondary side. said "no, secondaries are  on the front and are  jets on every Holley he ever seen" and it finally clicked.Primaries are a little rich but secondaries are really rich. He gots a friend who is an older fellow that is the local holley guru that coming by thursday night to tune the carbs. motor and rad are in now.picking  up oil and filter  and should get it fired tonight. hopefully no major leaks as we regasketed the oil pan and had to put acouple of heli-coil in front timing cover after dyno run after we checked a couple of the berings to make sure all was ok. my  local car show is this week end and should make it, which was my major goal.I have a lot of friend that are expecting my car there.Konrad,

Me either.  The carbs on a factory 2X4 setup are mounted backwards, right? That is probably the source of the confusion...
