69 428 w/o Extra Webbing?
« on: June 13, 2014, 11:24:51 PM »
Found this add. Not looking to buy just curious. Did these blocks offer 428 cores? I have wondered about the cores in an engine I had. In 100 deg weather, loaded trailer my 69 .060 over 390 never had overheating issues. http://austin.craigslist.org/pts/4504509427.html

Not a 428. Needs a "X", "A" or a "C" on the back of the block. And not all 428's came with extra webbing.  ;D

I have always been under the impression that the only true test for a 428 block was the drill bit test, because I thought Ford used different rear bulkhead mold patterns on all sorts of blocks over the years of production. But I am no expert on all the changes (and there are many) that Ford made over the years. One thing is for sure, the drill bit test is a quick judgment as to whether or not it will handle the bore size of a 428 instead of wondering if it just a severely overbored 360/390.

Good post on link Wes. That was the first thing I noticed was this block has the same makeup as my 70 390 I have now. The only blocks I have had that did have 428 cores and webbing were D3 and D4 castings. Guy in add may have straight cores cut to max.
