electrical connectors
« on: December 29, 2023, 07:57:46 PM »
I bought two Spal fans which have connectors on the end. I've been looking for them and can only find them with 8 feet of wire for 49 bucks each I need two. The part number is SBL-YAC-PT which comes with 8 feet of wire for 48 bucks each. I believe it's a 40-amp plug. I'm tempted to just cut it off and move on but it would be nice to be able to unplug them.

That connector is a very common 2 wire connector. You can probably get it at the boneyard. May even be able to get it from the part store if we can figure out the same connector on a stock vehicle. You may even be able to buy them as a unit male and female. I will call my part store tomorrow.

I use the individual spade connectors available from the electrical department of Menards or Home Depot.  The ones you want have the yellow plastic on them, and you can just crimp them on some 12 gauge stranded wire.  Tie wrap the two wires together, and you have an inexpensive solution that works just fine - Jay

That would be the easiest way if you go Jays way. But if your not using the weather pack connectors spal has the other regular connectors for like 11 dollars. You would need 4 so obviously Jays way would be like 5 dollars. You could get the ones that shrink and seal around the wires. For another couple of dollars you could get some shrink wrap also.

Just did a little research Dorman 91441 dual pigtail assembly.

I just did this on the Shelby stocker build. I’m running the fans with dual relays and just added a plug in connector on the end of the wires to each (like Jays). The relays pick up the 12v power from a distribution fuse block with 30 amp fuses and the trigger wire runs up under the dash to the “fan” switch.

I used a 4 pin square weather pack connector on mine. Very handy when I want to remove and re-install the radiator/fan assembly.

They're 11 inchers, Joe. Spal shroud, Mishimoto fans. Fit my radiator perfectly. Run off of an Autocoolguy pwm controller.

My brother used the autocoolguy controller and likes it a lot. Thinking about it for my Fairlane.

You have plenty of great suggestions already but I want to tell you one of my favorites.
Around here we have wrecking yards called "U-Pull" where you go pull the parts.
They are neatly set up in rows of similar age and make of vehicles.

When I need an electrical connector I go to a U-Pull and look at some of the modern cars (2010 and newer) because they are laden with electrical connectors....the higher the luxury options the more connectors.

I know what I am trying to make so I search for useful connectors.
Once I find a useful connector I cut that connector out of the wire harness leaving as much extra wire on each side of the connector as prudent.

Then I solder and shrink tube graft that connector into the wire system I am modifying and BAM!....a factory quality electrical connection for very little money and some time spent searching.

I searched this website for that part number and came up empty - they list a Spal adapter but it is different.
However, there are a whole bunch of options for sealed connectors you can build, or different terminals/connectors if there is something you prefer. Nothing here is discount or cheap, but the quality is there. I have purchased custom-built battery/starter cables and they are top-shelf.
Lots to look at here, and they make specialty fan relay kit$$$, but probably more than you care to spend.
