Ford 302 Tunnel Port
« on: October 07, 2022, 07:34:51 PM »
Just finished this one today, gonna dyno it on the 21st.  Just an exotic little Ford.

This one was built using a factory Boss 302 block, Eagle crank, Scat rods, custom Racetec pistons, and one of my custom hydraulic rollers.  10:1 compression, fairly mild camshaft, pair of 600's done by Drew P, factory distributor done by Jim Woods.  Intake was vapor blasted by Bobby Crumpley.

Very cool build Brent.

Went back in time to the old Net' 54 site for SBF TP posts but could not pull anything up. The TP heads looked like killers on the drawing and flow benches at the time. But actual road racing track use, what they were designed for, was disappointing. A consensus was that while top end power was terrific, either dropped valves or rod failures, caused by the need to rev the heck out of TP engines that had quite poor mid-range due to the big intakes, torque needed on twisty road courses, ultimately caused Ford to look elsewhere, hence the 'C' heads on the Boss block.

Anyway, I always wondered if a much bigger CID engine would better complement those great heads and need a lot less rpm to perform. Say a stoked 302W at 370+ cubes, a new 4.155 bore Boss block, and modern rings would be a great build as well.

A great and detailed l-o-n-g story of Ford's and Shelby's TP efforts:

My brother-in-law knows Bittle.  I got to peek my head into Bittle's engine dyno room for a tuning session on the 302 TP for his road race car.

Back in 1968 I was peripherally involved in putting together a drag-only '65 Mustang. The owner had connections at EEE and was determined to come up with the best possible combination. He was given access to everything that could dredged-up from the back shelves there.

For what it's worth, the combination he ultimately went with was 380+ CID with tunnel-port heads and intake. The extra displacement made ultra-high reving unnecessary with the extra cubes doing an excellent job of filling in through the mid range.

I'm doing another one for the same guy.  It's for his road race car.   I have a World Products block here for it, Bryant crankshaft, Dyers rods, etc.  It will get a custom sheet metal intake, along with a dry sump system, etc.
