Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: In the garage
« on: July 25, 2019, 05:24:50 AM »
My shop has been around 105 in Upstate NY. I'm also working in a Quonset hut so its like a convection oven in the sun! I'm working on insulating it and installing ceiling fans to help. A HVAC buddy of mine wants to install central air. That might be in next years budget! Luckily the fridge keeps the beer cold!

Ed Roth had a 406 powered 55 Chevy.... I vote go for it! Dual quads sticking out of the hood, side pipes and keystone classics.

Being that its an older floor I know its going to take a lot of prep work. I don't mind spending the money on a quality product if I know its going to last if the prep is right. I'd hate to have to try and remove paint or epoxy in 10 years and try and re-coat the floor. This isn't a display case garage either. I currently have 4 cars and two motorcycles in it getting work done. So there is a lot of traffic. My goal is to get one half (20'x40') done before fall and do the other half in the spring.

What's everyone using for a garage floor paint/epoxy? I'm looking to do something with my garage floor to help brighten up the space (40' x 40') and help cut down on the dust. Its an older floor from the 80's and it never stops creating dust. Just curious to see what you guys have had luck with in the past.

Who does machine work in that area and actually knows Fords? It seems like all the machine shops have closed. There were a couple left in Elmira that I think have gone defunct too.

Town Brothers Racing (TBR Machine) in Syracuse does all my machine work. Die hard ford guys. The owner Mark runs a SBF with a stick N/A to 8.0 in the quarter. The son has a turbo SBF stick car that moves right along. They have done a bunch of FE stuff and have cross bolted a block for me. They're great guys to work with.

Well with a combo of the 125M and 146MX bearings I got what I was looking for. They're all .0028-003". Everything is torqued and the crank spins nice. As nice as its going to spin with BradPenn assembly oil, that stuff is sticky.

I live 25 min north of Syracuse. I'm working on getting my engine back together for my Galaxie right now. I'm hoping to be there with it!

Everything is the same, other than the new bearings.  Even the time of year I'm assembling. My bore mic, 2-3" mic, crank, etc are all at the same temperature. The temp this time of year in my shop runs between 75-80 degrees. I ordered a set of 146MX bearings and I will see what I come up with.

Thanks, Brent. I was trying to avoid having to grind the crank.. I will look up the bearings and weigh my options. I was hoping to open up the clearance to .003". Fred

Mic'ing the crank journals and using a bore mic to check the bores.

Working on the assembly of my 451" after the cam bearing dilemma. Light polish on the crank. Mic'd the journals up and they are few tenths under. Torqued the caps down with 125M bearings. My clearances are coming in around .0018-.0022. The last time I put the engine together using the same brand bearings they came in at .0025"-.0027".. I know bearing MFG's allow a .0005" tolerance.   Has anyone had any experience with another brand bearing that tend to run on the looser side? I hate to buy another set of 125M and have them be the same. Anyone have experience with Cleveland bearings? I know you have to remove the tang. What is the part number for a 3/4 groove Cleveland bearing to allow .001" more clearance?  Fred

It has Merc  heads on it. I haven't checked the stroke yet so it could just be a rebuilt flathead with Merc heads. Who knows what Allstate did back in the day for Reman engines. I wonder what year Ford did away with the splits and went to a one piece rim set up.

And here's some pictures of the fastback...

My cousin has decided she is going to sell off her old family farm and parked for approx 40 years behind the main barn was this... A  1952 F6 V8 Mercury flathead dump truck( missing the dump box but still has the hydraulics). 16,000# GVW, 4 speed, 2 speed rear 5.83/8.11 and PTO driven hydraulics.

Her grandfather bought it new and it came out of the Buffalo, NY Ford plant. She said it's mine if I can get it before the junk man gets to it. A couple phone calls later to some very helpful friends that work for beer and food. Several hours later we had the ol' girl home.  My one buddy noticed the Allstate Reman tag so we checked the oil and it looked like it was just poured in. So we decided to put a breaker bar on the front and see if she turns. No hang ups or catches and spun nice. So in goes a battery and some fresh gas in the bowl of the Ford 94. Filed the points. Hit the key and cranked it over about a dozen times and the old flathead lit! I was impressed. Next step is working on the fuel supply and getting new tires for the front and replacing the split rims. I'd like to find a newer rim that will fit the bolt pattern. I've got a soft spot for these old big trucks.  Now if I can only get her to come off the '65 fastback Mustang 289 auto in the barn....

This is the first I've heard about the lebanon valley event. I'm hoping to have my galaxie back up and running by mid may but I don't believe I will make it out for that one..
