Bead blast then you can clear them or leave them alone.

Chris I'm with you on the old flathead 6's.  Great running little engines and you can perk them up with a free flowing exhaust, 2 barrel
carb and crank some timing in them.  They did what they were designed for back then.
I love seeing old machinery brought back to life.

I agree with Barry's comment. When I started seeking out some decent TP stuff I was wanting to do something different than the
aluminum headed stuff everyone was building at the time. I wanted to use original Ford heads and intake.  I found a set of TP heads that some told me were probably "junk". Brent sent them to Ray Shepherd and he fixed them. We went on to build 3 different iterations of that engine. I have to admit it was fun but also not cheap but none of this is and it was my first go around at this FE stuff.  We ended up with an old iron headed TP
that makes some serious HP.
I'm sure we could have gotten to the same power level with a stroked 385 series for a whole lot less money but it wouldn't have any provenance to it and that is what I like most about it.

Ross back when I did the 460 for my truck there were very few parts for the conversion other than L&L stuff. I didn't think it was to
pricey back then. I used a 40lb steel billet flywheel and a center force clutch kit. I know lot of guys don't like the center force clutches but this one has been great,  Other outfits now make the motor mounts and headers but nothing is cheap.  I have a set of Hedman fender well exit headers but think I'll just keep the L&L ones on it.

I just watched that video and thought it was pretty good at laying out what you can do with a 460 without breaking the bank.
I can personally say that getting 600hp out of an FE takes a little voodoo to accomplish and a bunch of cash. To go beyond that
takes more of both  ;D.
Back in the mid 80's I build a 460 for my 78 F150. I recently found the receipts while going through some stuff in my garage. I have around $1500 in the engine including machine work but not counting the L&L headers, new clutch etc.
Used a block out of a Lincoln and kept the crank and rods.  Heads are C9VE-A's with screw in studs and guide plates, hardened push rods and adjustable rockers. I did clean up the exhaust ports but didn't touch the intake.
Edelbrock performer RPM intake and 750 carb. Comp cams 260 cam, double roller chain, new oil pump, TRW forged pistons and a stock duraspark distributor.  This thing runs great and has tons or torque and gets better mileage than the 351M that was in it.
I love these old FE's but if you just want HP I think the 460 is the way to go.  They will make way over 600HP with ported stock iron heads.
My 2 cents

Chris,
Yes I knew about the dodge distributors and have kept my eye out for a decent one.  My old loadamatic seems to working pretty
good now that I put a new vacuum advance on it and cranked some more timing in it.  I think I'm going to leave mine alone for now.
My old F3 is certainly not a hot rod so I think what I have may be ok for now.
Good luck with yours and let me know how it turns out.

Interesting build Brent.

I'm guessing 633HP.

Chris I have a 226H that's going in my F3 pickup and I've looked at swapping out the distributor.  On the HAMB board
they suggest using an old Dodge distributor.  You have to cut off the end of the Loadamatic and graft it onto the Mopar. The
diameter of the body where it goes into the block is the same.
I just put a new vac advance on mine and new points etc and it seems to do really well. I have cranked in some more advance which was recommended and it runs great  Also tried using an old model 94 carb on it with an adapter I got from Speedway Motors. I put the single barrel back on it because of some issues with the 2 but it runs so good with the single I may forget the 2 barrel.  I built a set of headers for mine and they really perked it up.  Getting rid of that restrictive exhaust really helps.
Let me know if you find something modern that works

First engine I ever built from scratch was a 460 for my 78 F-150 that I bought new and still have.  Used an engine out of a Lincoln and kept the block, crank, and rods. Junked the rest. Had a set of early 69 429 heads that I used. Friend of mine was a machinist at a local shop and guided my thru it. 0.030 over with TRW flat tops, comp cams 260H cam. adjustable rockers, rebuilt NAPA duraspark. Assembled it in my dad's outbuilding with his help and hauled it in a lawn cart to the driveway, that was scary, and had an engine hoist I rented and installed it myself.  It's still running today and has way more power than what I ever dreamed it would.

I love FE's because of the history and have a 511TP for my 66 Fairlane and several other 427's.
Right now I have a 48 Ford F3 I am into. It has a 226H flathead 6. I recently built a set of headers for it and also installed a Ford Model 94 2 barrel on it.  It's a sweet running engine.
Also have some 385 stuff, bunch of Cleveland's, ford flathead V8, got rid of my Y block-gave to friend for his truck and recently sold my willy's GPW stuff to a guy for his jeep collection, also have some Ford Modular 4.6 parts, ported heads, kellog 3.8 stroker crank and bunch of high end parts for it. My garage is basically fully of engine parts.
I'm a Ford guy but I like other stuff too. I think an old hemi would be cool to build and put in a rat rod.  I have my eye on a 1949 Pontiac straight eight right now. Just needs to get cheaper for me to bother with it.  I just love messing with old engines.  Maybe it's a disease  ;D

I have for sale a bullet solid roller cam that has one dyno session of time on it only.
Was replaced with a larger cam.
 Specs: Duration @20 295/306, Duration @50 260/270, Gross lift 616/660 ICL 104.5/ECL 107.5
 Asking $250 + shipping

I also have the matching springs for it for $150 + shipping and the Bullet branded Morel SR lifters for $500 +shipping. The lifters alone sell   for around $725-750 a set. All of this has dyno time only on it.  Everything was spec'd out by Brent Lykins.

This set up made 600hp in a 465 cube tunnel port.
Send my a message if interested or you have any questions.
Thanks  garyv
