Title: How an automatic transmission works....
Post by: cjshaker on August 11, 2015, 08:47:41 PM
Just thought some of you "auto" guys might find this helpful, since automatics always have that "black magic" aura associated with them. Turns out they're pretty straight forward and easy to understand ;D ;D

Dont it make ya wanna get one ?  LoL
no seriously I ran a C6 for a long time. Roller bearings,  low gear set and it held up just fine.
Stuck a crash boxed top loader in with a solid disk clutch and adjustable pressure plate and I was hooked.
Next came the jerico and a windowed bell for quick adjustments and no looking back.
Got my eye on a good friends completely re worked jeffco when hes ready to make a deal.

As my friend Joel says, why would anyone put an oily, greasy, smelly, fluid coupling in their car?   ;D

On the other hand, how can you identify the stick cars at the track?
     - Look for the cars with the biggest piles of broken parts  ;D ;D ;D

Very good..when I bought the 68 in 1977 it was a small block auto. After a year of abuse and too many drinks one night I broke it bad...4spd ever since.I even broke the C-6 in my FE powered F-250..Didnt brake the auto in my 7.3 ford but I didn't abuse it...

I'll take 3 pedals any day...I do much better with them

Auto trans users are...shiftless?  ;)

Jay's somewhat right about broken parts. Yet, with today's adjustable, lock-up clutches and face-plated stick trannys, it is a reliable way to go fast with minimal breakage and far less parasitic hp loss.

Now that was totally uncalled for...no matter how true it is!  ;D

Just imagine how fast they'd be with an extra gear and less power loss. Not to even get into the cool factor..lol

But Ya gotta admit Jay.
The Stang redo with 5 gear and the WAY KOOL Fastback Torino with three pedals
are what make them ultra kool.
They would be just coolish with the lady shifter.
Me thinks you would have passed on the Torino if it was an auto car.  ::)

If it was an auto car, it wouldn't have been a Drag Pack car, so you're right about that, Howie...

Am I missing something here....??? There are lots of drag Pack autos....Its the staggered shocks that are 4spd only..

Maybe I'm missing something; I was under the impression that the Drag Pack cars were 4-speed only.  If that is not the case, then maybe I would've still bought that Torino, even if it was an auto.  In any case I have to agree, though, that it is cooler with the 4 speed...

Its cool that its complete,a 4spd and has survived...Most of the factory 4spd big block cars got wrecked or stripped..And the bonus drag pack option just makes it sweeter
I have been looking after a 69 SCJ Mach I for 20 years. All original drivetrain including the automatic.
Thus my comment...

I learned how to drive in my uncle's 68 mustang fastback . 390 4v with a top loader and 3.73 rear gear. I was 15. Dam I loved that car. He wasn't a serious gearhead or anything and all he ever did was put a set of hookers on it and stuck a fireball cam in it and those old straight through thrush mufflers.  She rattled the old windows in the farm house. To this day everytime I hear someone kicking out the base rattling the trunk lids in there donk's I think how the best rattle of all comes from a big block FE ford. Dam I wanted that car..

Just to fuel the fire a little. ;)
I dont consider a Lenco a true stick.
It kind of occupies the land between auto and stick.
To me a stick means having to push a clutch and shift an H pattern.

So what was a B+M "Hydro-Stick"?  Just a GM 4-speed Hydramatic with a manual valve body?  I realize I'm dating myself here  ;)

Bruce

B&M Hydro-Stick
The name B&M is virtually synonymous with performance automatic transmissions for racing and the street. Founded in 1953 by Bob Spar and Mort Schuman, Bob's brother Don bought out Schuman's share in 1959, and shortly thereafter B&M introduced its famous Hydro-Stick four-speed racing automatic based on GM's Hydra-matic. The manually shifted Hydro-Stick finally solved the remaining problems associated with racing automatics, like keeping the transmission in low gear until the driver chose to shift, launched B&M to fame and forever gave automatic transmissions a place in drag racing history (later in the decade the company even experimented with an automatic tranny for Indy cars). Today, B&M transmissions, shifters, and torque converters are staples of the street and strip.--Matt King

Yeah, that's a bummer about Hubert :(

While technically there's nothing "automatic" about a Lenco, they can be air-shifted with electronically controlled solenoids. Still, they are pretty cool when shifted manually, and I don't think a tank could bust one.

A Jerico can be clutchless, clutched or air shifted (in the 5spd clutchless) also, but they are a manual transmission. I somewhat agree on the clutch, Marc. I'll be picking up a Jerico 4spd sometime soon, and whether it's a clutched or clutchless, I'll use the clutch just because I prefer to. If you're good, there's no reason somebody can't shift just as fast using a clutch.

Not my fastest shifts here because I was still breaking in my newly rebuilt toploader. Now that it's broken in, I can shift without letting off the gas and the engine doesn't have time to "rev".

Yeah agree and I'm not downplaying any way to get to the line.
They all have their merits.
Just think it's "interesting" that some say "no autos" when they're sportin' a Lenco.
If you have a clutch then you can say all you want.

I did, however, find this quote in the video interesting, "entirely automatic and requires no skill on the drivers part". Just sayin ;D ;D

Well, there you go.  For a guy like me, who can miss a shift with a 2-speed automatic  ::), no skill required on the driver's part sounds very appealing  ;D ;D
