Anybody see the FE build on Powernatuon?
« on: May 24, 2020, 03:01:43 PM »
I know these guys aren't the legends of FE's like Brent , Barry, Blair  and Jay but nice to see them doing an FE. I know sometimes they short the FE  and don't give it much credit but at least they did one.

They've actually done two in recent times.  The old junkyard 390 and then the 445.  Pat Topolinski hit me up on Instagram to compare some notes on the 445 as I use a lot of TFS heads.   He's a super nice guy.

I actually sold them the 390 block they used for the patina'd FE as they call it. Pat's partner Mike Galley sent me the dyno sheet with some impressive numbers.

Funny you mention as I just finished watching it a couple minutes ago.   Pretty similar to some recent builds here, but they used a pretty big hydraulic roller, wonder if the valvetrain stayed stable.  Happy to see a fairly nice FE build without a bunch of poorly matched parts, and also first build I’ve seen with the TFS intake

Yeah, I liked that they used TFS heads and intake. I dont know if it was just the camera angle but it seemed like the angle was a mismatch from intake to head mating surface.

The TFS heads seem to be a good out of the box head from looking at Brents builds. Would love to see what they would do on a 390  with  a low rpm hydraulic roller build like what Blair did without the stroker kit.

How low?

I’ve done a 390 with them but it peaked at 6.  540 hp.

I'm thinking of a cam that peaks in torque at 3500 to 3800. If it revs to 5500 rpm and is done thats fine.

It's normally around a 1500-1700 rpm split between peak torque and horsepower.  I still think you could make 425-440 hp with a real short cam.

I did a 482 with a BBM block, unported BBM heads, and a Performer RPM intake that made over 620 lb-ft of torque.  It had 590 lb-ft available at 2500 and made 540 hp.  I'd love to see what something like that would do with the TFS heads.

So with the hp being around 425-440, what kind of torque would we see?

I guess is that it would push 500, maybe a hair higher.

If it hit 500ft lb that would suit me fine.

This one made 515 lbft.

I’d pull some cam out to give better low end manners.  I think the torque would stay close.

I just finished watching that video. Pretty decent power numbers. Also interesting crack in that block, guess it froze but usually they are bulged out when that happens.

It was a pretty lazy cam.  Big duration, but lazy lobes.

Thanks Brent! I'm still learning how a hydraulic roller acts compared to a flat tappet.  When I read the specs of a flat tappet I have general idea of the range of power and size.  I'm kinda lost on rollers as I've never been around one or heard one in an FE to get a idea. Dont really know how mild one is or how streetable it is by looking at the specs.
