#%!?!+%#! Gas caps!!!
« on: April 20, 2021, 07:34:54 PM »
This is the second time Ive had this issue with gas caps on older Ford vehicles.  As Ford liked to do, at some point they changed the depth of the ears thst engaged the inner locking flange on the filler neck.  Some are 1/4ish” deep, some are 1/2ish”.  I had the same issue with my Merc that no matter where I ordered it, they’d send the shallow eared model.  Having same issue with a cap for my Fairlane now, it has the deep locking ring but I e bought two from different sources and both were shallow ear models.  Anyone been through this and know when they switched and where I can find the right cap?

What year and model Ford do you have? The original gas tank on my 59 was pretty rusty, so I bought a new tank, and since the old cap was looking pretty rough as well, I ordered a new cap from my local auto parts store. Like you, the new cap didn`t fit, the tabs were to close to cap , although my rusty old cap fit fine. My parts store ordered several different caps for various Ford, but none fit properly. I eventually bought a cap that fits properly, from Dennis Carpenter. It is a non vented cap, PN AB-9030-C, the Carpenter catalog says this cap is for 1952 thru 59 . May be worth looking into.

I've played the game too. I replaced tanks in 68-69's. Spectra tanks if I remember correctly. I called Spectra and got a series of Stant cap numbers and none of them were correct. Found a NOS one on ebay, paid $30 or $40 for it however it fit. I still have the Stant recommendation's in their original boxes. Written in letters on the box, "doesn't fit"!

Both a 63 Marauder, and a 66 Fairlane take the deeper locking ears but every time I order for them, I get the shallow.  My 64 F100 has the shallow locking ears

Appreciate the responses.  We all know this game, paid $15 for a $7 part because I was fed up with local stores, it’s not worth returning so now I have a stockpile of wrong caps   :)

I’ll check out the 50s caps, appreciate the tip.  I bought the one for my Merc at Carlisle and have no clue to the application, just saw it sitting on a table and knew it would work

I played that game with my 61. Needed the deeper locking tabs but they kept sending shallow ones. I had a 57 Ford at one time with the longer tabs and depending which car I drove I'd put the 57's cap on it. Finally saw a pic of a long tab cap on epay that fit some off the wall 50's car that looked like it would work. It was cheap so I picked it up and got lucky it worked.
