Holly electric fuel pump
« on: April 11, 2021, 05:22:03 PM »
Hi Guys

HAs anyone had  one of these pumps  start shooting  gas out of the side of the bottom plate?  Pump  is about 10 years old ,never a problem before. Drove the car as recently as last thanksgiving.   I use only  non ethanol gas and some race gas  mixed in  from local raceway in  in eastern Colorado.

I pulled the bottom plate  to check the gasket  but there is no evidence  that it ever had a gasket at that plate.  inside is a rubber diaphram  a bit larger than an accelerator pump membrane.   Maybe that is just worn out.

Pls advise if you have any ideas.

All the best

Larry

Which Holley pump do you have? Is it the standard "red" or "blue"? There should be a gasket for the bottom plate. The rebuild kit including the plate gasket for the red pump is #12-805 and 12-806 for the blue.

You must of gotten one of the "good" pumps to last that long.  Likely just the gasket for the bottom plate finally gave out.  Should be an easy fix.  Four small bolts, just don't do it while it's hanging upside down as the four vanes will likely fall out.

I used to run a blue Holley 20 sum years ago.  I fought it for weeks on end til I threw it away and put a Mallory on the wagon and been good since.  (well, as long as I didn't just jinx it).

I have never  in over 10 years  had that pump off the car  or disassembled.  When  I pulled the plate  to look for  the leak  , There  was no gasket!!.

No gasket?  Hmmm.   It is just a very thin piece of paper.

I have had great luck with Holley "Blue" fuel pumps. I ran a Holley Blue on my 85 Mustang Stock Eliminator car from 2002 until I sold the car a few years ago, and the same Holley Blues been in my Fairmont since 1988. I did have a similar gas leak at the cover plate, about 10 years ago, replaced the flat gasket, and has been fine ever since. 33 years (and counting) service, if it ever does die, I wouldn`t hesitate to buy another identical Holley pump.
