Next step for the 352....
« on: March 24, 2021, 06:11:05 AM »
JJ is getting a work out.   I've lost track of the number of pulls that we have made, but the next iteration is an intake manifold change.

I have two manifolds to try.  I traded for a "NOS" Dove Spyder and I also bought a brand new Blue Thunder MR 8V.

I've got a pair of Holley 600's on the way, so my inclination is to try the BT intake first since it pulled ahead in Jay's intake manifold testing.  It seems like all my personal FE's end up with some kind of 2x4 setup on them eventually anyway.

Not sure what this will net me but I'm already pleased with the 352's power, considering it's a factory headed engine with a dual plane intake and compression low enough to run on pump gas.  Anyone want to hazard a guess?  We are at 465 hp in current form.

After the intake test, I think I'll swap camshafts and sneak up a little on the lobe aggression.  The current camshaft has some gentle lobes on it.

After that, it will be time to pull it all back down, and swap some pistons to some higher compression pieces.

ill go 494
Dont remember what the torque was but i will up that 20 also.
Nothing better than a 2x4 setup especially when its working right.

Did you port match the BT 8V?  If not, then there may not be much difference in horsepower, but the torque average should improve.  Joe-JDC

Joe, interested in your thinking on this.   In Jay's test with a stroked 390, an unported BT MR 8V was the third from the top of the pack, with about 517 hp.  A port matched/internally ported PI intake was hitting at about 494.

A port matched Dove Spyder was about 505.

I went back and checked a couple of stock BT 8V flow figures, and the average is ~368 cfm with one port flowing 325 cfm.  If I remember correctly, Jay's heads were Edelbrocks that flowed ~300 cfm at that time.  I feel like JJ is actually maximizing the PI-F intake because of the smaller cubic inches, and going to a larger dual plane intake will not improve the horsepower a lot.  I hope I can be surprised.  I don't want to predict at this point, but I hope I am wrong.   The Dove will tell the truth about cubic inches/vs flow.  The Dove may be hard to load against the dyno below 5000 rpm.   Joe-JDC

You think yours is junky- just lit this old beastie up after sitting for years last Saturday. If it wasn't for testing a customers' 780, she would be 100% stock, 65 352-4V. Sounds pretty throaty, and very responsive

Got a new Blue Thunder MR 8V intake and some 600's from Drew.  Here's where we sit today, ready for the dyno again.

Even if it doesn't make any more horsepower, it sure does look good.

Thank you for not having a Fram oil filter on there.
