351C 4V Truck Header?
« on: March 03, 2021, 09:10:48 AM »
Gentlemen, are any of you aware of a 4V 351 Cleveland header that could be used in a 2wd pick-up application? Late '80s truck specifically but I think the '70s model trucks are similar.

     NONE, commercially on the shelf; but there's always the "you-weld-it" brand!   :)

I figured that would be the case. However, I was hoping maybe someone had used a set from a car application and would, with some "messaging", install in the truck.

     might check 351M as they were in  70s bronco -the full size ones  -  port might match? or close

     and modify might be better than from -0- build

     Obvious modifications required:

        Port-flange cut off and replaced with one for the 4V heads vs 2V application, but now the small tube diameter, which in itself is less than desirable, won't  s-t-r-e-t-c-h  that far to fit properly in the larger flange openings!     :o

        Section the four primary tubes on each side to shorten the length as 351M/400's are taller deck height engines vs. the 351C, of coarse maybe you could just let the headers hang down extra low in the chassis, assuming they didn't engage the front cross member or axle assembly!      ???

             Hum, lets' see.............. ::)

I thought about M headers as well. Probably be the most feasible way to go.
Would involve buying 2 sets of headers but I could buy a couple cheap sets, one for the M and another for a 4V Cleveland, cut the tubes 2 or 3 inches down from the flanges where they have already turned down, then weld the 4V uppers to the M lowers.
My friend who has worked at a muffler shop for the last nearly 50 years can make it work, I'm sure. He has built headers for people in the past.

     But perhaps end up with a cool set of "stepped" headers, just going the wrong way!     ::)

No matter what, stepped wrong or otherwise, they'll flow better than a stock iron manifold.

I ran a set of 351m/400 headers on mine for years.  I don’t know how much it hurt power but it ran good anyway.  Had a cool swirl carbon pattern on face of header flange.   They do hang a little lower but it was in a 70f250 4x4.  I really think the tubes will stretch to a 4bbl flange with some careful heat

      Yeah, probably in a "HI-Boy" you'd be O.K.!     :)

I ran 4v in a 1974 f-100 with 4 speed , ran 69-70 Mustang headers , I think it was . had to trim the little cross member that goes between the strut braces .

Maybe you could look into trying to put 351C 4 barrel flanges on a set of 460 headers. I know back in the 70s, the Cyclone headers that I installed on my 351C 4V 70 Mustang were available with either 2 or 4 barrel configurations, with the 4 barrel having considerably larger tubes. Later on, many of the header companies decided to stop producing 2 different headers for the 351C Mustangs, instead using a compromise size, bigger than the 2V, but smaller than the 4V. I think my 4V headers were 1 7/8" tube size, and the 2 barrel were 1 5/8", the compromise around 1 3/4".
