Side oiler by pass

I didn't want to "hijack" Mr. Conley's  oil pump discussion. I have a side oiler block, and was wondering how you would set them up for bypass, of the oil pump, and the rear bypass in block???

Are you talking about setting the in block bypass with a lower pressure than the in pump bypass? There were some cases where that was done but I can't remember if it was on the production stuff or if it was a Holman Moody thing, they had the in block set at like 85 psi and the in pump set at like 105.I could easily see that being a Holman Moody thing  since they ran the thick shell purolator filters.

The factory pump should bypass at 100psi and the bypass at the rear of the block at 80psi.  Pump builder sells a replacement kit that includes a new valve, spring, and plug.  In theory the the pump bypass should never open, but is there just in case. In reality on a cold morning with cold thick oil you could open it. The purpose of the rear bypasss is to help make sure you have enough oil pressure to the mains. To test you would need to measure the oil pressure at the back of the block and run the pump fast enough to get to 80psi and verify it opens. Most guys either disable the rear bypass and use a CJ pump or or buy the kit and hope it is right.

Thank you. Yes, that is what I was referring to. Just what I needed to know.

My stock side oiler block bypass spring opens at 30 PSI. Checked it years ago with the pan off and actually saw it. That is what Ford says it is supposed to do.

Both my sideoilers have the block bypass blocked and using a std. high volume, std. pressure pump. Works fine and been running that way for 15-20 years. Hot running pressure is 65 lbs. using 10-40 oil.

I have 2 good, oil pumps, one a near new old stock ,427 pump which is a "spur gear" style, and a new Melling HV standard pressure, pump. I know most use the Melling, as it is what is readily available. Interesting that you block the rear bypass, but I can't argue with 15-20 year history, it works!

Is the spur gear pump a Holman Moody piece similar to the ones they made for the Boss 429 engines?

I believe it is. I got this from a local engine builder, (years ago), who built Ford engines, during the 60's and 70's for oval track. He regularly ordered parts from Holman Moody, had some connections there and at Ford engineering. This pump was the style pump he used on wet sump 427's.

Back in the day TRW had a spur gear replacement pump for the FE.  Some years back I pulled one out of a core engine.  The guys on the other FE forum i.d.'d it as such.  It had a stout cast iron cover on it too.  Randy M

If its a Holman Moody pump it will probably have a stub sticking out of the bottom of the drive gear that accepts the drive shaft, that stub will fit into a bushing in the bottom cover so that its bushing supported on both ends of the gear,at least thats how their Boss 9 pumps were made.
