Unofficial 352 Beating
« on: January 19, 2021, 12:40:39 PM »
Beat on the old 352 in my 65 F-250 today for a mile or so. Decent pull from about 68 to about 105 mph. Stock 3.5" stroke, 4.000" bore, early 66 390GT/428 camshaft, C0AE-D heads, SP2P-390 intake and a Quadrajet. Sort of hit a wall at 107 and wouldn't climb past 109 in this short run. This one being a daily driver/towing I didn't press it too hard, just got a little frisky with out a trailer behind it. Had a few stay together and a few come apart doing that in the 65 F-100. Averaged 125 mph for 45 miles with a 390 once. That same 390 with a bigger carb didn't last but 10 miles at 6,200 rpm before it pulled the crank too dry. I suppose in a car it would have been a little more stable at top end but did the job. Have you guys stretched to legs on your daily driver lately?

I figured by posting the slowest acceleration numbers it would leave the door open. It is ok to have a slow but dependable FE daily driver that is not a race car.

I don't have ANY place that would allow me to wring something out for 1/8 mile, let alone 45 miles  :o

25 yrs ago, you could get away with 1-2 gear pull in town but that was the limit of safety.  Though today, watching these fools in their turbo cars running around on Saturday night they run 100+mph between lights. Stupid, just stupid.

I have to leave my playing around for the multitude of dragstrips around me.  I've had the Mack, blower car, wagon, and '69 F100 on the track in the last 30 yrs.  Never tried the Harley.  I don't get any thrill of going fast on 2 wheels.

Yeah, even in the 90's the highways were not as crowded. I only had to ease up once till the curve and other traveler were in plain site. I take it not many of you guys live in rural areas. On the street racing I agree. There are lines I wouldn't cross even in my younger days. Probably not but a few of us that don't take advantage of the open road though.

Along that train of thought I always had a soft spot for not only 352s like in my dads truck but 360s in the trucks I grew up on. You could abuse the crap out of them and they just ran. I did some abusive things to that motor as a youngun.

Bare open roads are everywhere around me. From my house, I can hear a car running through the gears at least every couple of days in the summer time. Unfortunately, they're always cars that I don't care for (aka: all new crap).

130 Toll Road here in south TX from I-10 to Austin has about 45 miles of 85 mph speed limit, and from Austin to Jarret another 45 miles at 80 mph.  Drive out I-10 past Kerrville, and you can drive all day long at 80 mph legally.  Joe-JDC

Mine is out of commission at the moment waiting for a new engine build, but when it is running I have a good section of well-divided 4 lane highway in the middle of almost nowhere near me, starting with a stop light, and no intersections from my light for maybe a mile.

That's where I go for 1/4 mile G-Tech runs.

A short little rip with no one coming the other way should not hurt anyone.

I have a divided highway nearby for when sustained test n tune runs are needed.

You are a brave man to go 125+ in a '65 F100.

Out west away from the coast there are some roads that you can get up some speed on. In Nevada Hwy 93 and 95 and their tributaries are pretty barren. There are several stretches of more than 100 miles between anything, no gas stations, no houses, not even telephone poles. Sometimes there is not another car for many miles.
The only difference between driving them and running the Silver State Classic is nobody is timing you (hopefully!)

It was a good run so I figured I would see it through. 48 miles in 17.5 minutes. At 18 anything is possible. Now at 46 I've got too much on the line. Would be nice to wake up the old truck and take it to the Texas mile one day.

There you go Tom, you and Doug have an opportunity to show the youngsters how an old pushrod V8 does it.

A local builder has a 66 or 67 427 Fairlane he's had since the early 70's. He took me and a friend for a ride in it powered by his "spare 390 parts". My buddy was used to fast 4 wheelers and dirt bikes. I wanted to see what he thought of the old FE so I let him ride up front. I sat in the middle of the back seat. Windows down somewhere around 110 the builder slammed 4th and I got sand blasted with dirt. The old car wasn't dirty but I bet I had dirt in my eyes from half the tracks across the country.
