C7ae-A heads
« on: October 15, 2020, 07:41:59 PM »
Been running across 14 bolts lately. I don’t know much about them.
They worth lookin into for the right price?
Are 16 bolts the same head?
Thanks in advance.

The C7AE-A heads were the common FE head used in the 1967 model year on everything, except the 427. They came in both 8 exhaust bolt hole pattern for the full size cars, including T-Bird, and pickup trucks, and 14 exhaust bolt hole pattern for cars with shock towers. So everything from a 352 2V in a pickup to the 428 used in the ‘67 Shelby GT 500. They didn’t come in 16 exhaust bolt hole pattern, but many of them have been re-drilled over the years, either for use on different vehicles, or to use various headers. Depending on why someone added the extra holes they may just have the regular 16 bolt pattern, or they might have the double drilled upper end bolt holes. Sometimes the extra upper end bolt holes may be filled with a cut-off bolt, etc. The 14 exhaust bolt hole pattern heads were used on both the 390 GT ( and Shelby 428 ) engines, and will have single piece valve spring retainers, and valve springs to match the “hotter” cam the 390 GT engines had, or were also used on the 390 2V engines that also went into the shock tower cars, so it’s how the heads were machined and assembled that determine if they are “390 GT” heads.

Exactly right, date code and exhaust bolt location "could" make them desirable to the right guy, but it would be a guy looking for original parts.   However, as said, they are a lo-po unibody/truck head.  I would consider them on par with a C8AE-H or D2TE-AA for performance.
