67 Custom R code
« on: October 05, 2020, 12:01:43 PM »
A guy called me looking for engine parts for his 67 Custom R code two door sedan.

I was thinking the full sized cars might use the tall plain pentroof valve covers since there is no power brake booster in the way like in Fairlanes. Or would all 67's use the same Power by Ford chromed ones as a 390GT or 427 Fairlane?

About 25 years ago i heard of this car from the original owner who told the story of wanting a 427 Fairlane like the 66 he saw at the local track. He went to order one but 66 production was finished and there was not going to be a 427 available in the 67 Fairlane. So he ordered the lightest car he could get the engine in. By the time it arrived the 427 Fairlane had been announced. Apparently the 427 was pulled from the car way back then.

That's what i thought, he figured the Power By Ford but the shop manual illustration actually has the Pentroof . Maybe it matter when in the model year, this car was built before the Fairlane was annopunced.

I know it’s a bit hard to read the tag, but there’s what looks to be a “RUG-B” big input toploader at the Ford used parts sale going on in Minnesota this week. The Ford parts book says that should be for a 1967 Galaxie with 427, probably weren’t many of those. Just in case the guy needs a transmission for his car.

Can’t be many of those Customs built. I sniffed a one of two, ‘65 Custom two years back.
Love to hear more about that 67.

I'll bump to see pics.

JB,
The '65s are rare but the exact number of Custom R-Codes is simply not known.
If you include with Custom 500's I know of six!

If that isn't enough a couple days later i get a call from a guy looking for a power steering bracket for a 428 Cj in a 68 Cougar. I asked if it's the blue one i'd read about. It is. What an amazing story on that car.

Hi Lars,
I know you the car I referenced. The seller claimed his research showed two known to be made of that model in ‘65. Maybe I have the model wrong? I lost my pics of that car.

I wonder if there was any measurable performance difference between the 427 and 428 version considering they shared the same intake and exhaust systems.

What? No ending to the story, no updates since 2013? That's a cool story, but you'd be roasted here if you didn't follow up with the story. And that launch picture, he couldn't post it?? Argh!  :P

On the Cougar the guy that called me i think is 59 Imp on that link, he  and a couple others are putting it back together for the guy. It isn't done yet, almost.

And a third super rare Ford though non FE this time... a friends 71 convertible is finally getting worked on, i've known him decades and this car was always sitting in the carport (not garage like it says)  This is the fella with the 57 Ford i was on Drag Week with and Jay's met him.
That underhood shot with it buried in rat and squirrel nests is how it looked two years ago.

Yes, that was Carlisle 2012.  The '67 was found/owned by Adrian Clements, who has bird-dogged some amazing Ford "survivors" over the years.  This car was, as I recall, originally a cop car from Pennsylvania(?).  Randy M
