Interesting ....

Widening it up killed a good bit of power...

It's all relative.

Widening it up will kill power when you need more overlap. 

I've got engines running 116-119 LSA's because that's what's optimal for it. 

But if you took an engine that's low on overlap to start with, widen it more, then yes, it will kill it.
