Intake and exhaust valve size for street vehicle
« on: August 05, 2020, 03:18:37 AM »
65 F100 ... 3300 lbs..... 4 speed or C6 ... 3.75 gears

.040 over 390 block... 390 or 428 crank ( keep changing my mind )

1 3/4" full length headers, ported Edelbrock 390 Performer intake, any carb, any mufflers/pipes....  any cam

Nice set of D2 heads... have stock size valves and CJ size valves

Not gonna turn the mill much over 5,000 rpm.. if ever .... want the mill to pull hard in any gear

Will drive on weekends, to shows/cruise ins ... etc ..

What does the forum think on valve size and cam, carb  ??

Ricky.

Those are some big "or's".  A lot of those choices will change the cam specs.

CJ valves, with as much porting as you can afford (that's the pull hard part)
428 crank (that's the other pull hard part)
750 vac sec
270S/H cam would do OK, but custom would be better to add a little split and a lobe sep to match use
Compression to match cam choise
Wide ratio car 4 speed would pull hard,...close ratio/automatic not at much, truck 4 speed not as much

However, to sharpen the pencil, need to commit to some decisions

I would really recommend getting an accurate weight from a public scale. My 66 F100 with 390/c6 and only mods of front and rear sway bars with 10 gallons of fuel plus 175lb driver is 4200 ;bs. the obvious of 1000lbs extra will make a determination in your choice of parts. I have had 4.11,3.50 gears and in my opinion if your just in the city would be go with the bigger gear. I would get a mechanical advanced dist. and dial it in..the vac secondary just always lags a little, but I'm not a carb tuner.
Had a 270h cam and it pulled good but swapped out for a custom cam for my set up. Stock heads and valve size with just enough polishing on the intake and exhaust runners to remove the rough and nothing in the bowls. The custom cam was night and day difference and the cost was negligible. I would use a performer rpm or a port a sonic manifold.. the only difference by the seat of you pants is a lot more top end..but both do great up to your 5000rpm.. after the headers I would definitely recommend a larger exhaust pipe of 3"  it sounds great and much better performance than the 2" most muffler shops put on
my f100 is just a 390 + .30 c/6 and 4.11 gears and it's a monster on the street stop light to stop light plus the added bonus I towed a 12,000 lb trailer behind it 2000+ miles from the Midwest through the rockies and it never flinched and when I dropped the hammer it would out accelerate traffic to merge onto the highways.
I guess the point is match all your parts and you won't be disappointed

Weighed right around 3750 with full tank of fuel, no driver

Taking over 300 pounds out of it over the next few months

Tried many different combinations on the 65 F-100. Seems it was always it's best all around with 3.70 gears and manual transmission. 275/60R15 - 245/60R15. The 3.5" stroke engines got the non-modified StreetMaster and the 3.78" stroke engines did better with the opened up StreetMaster. Kept going back to the VS 750. Even with 3.70's and the heavier fleet side bed wheel hop was there but I was more interested in top end and how long it could stay there.

I say stab some 3.00's and run the Standing Mile.
