not a call you want
« on: July 19, 2020, 09:09:17 PM »
Got a call at 9pm on sat night. The shop where I keep my 67 is on fire. Its a concrete building with a wood roof.I got up there in 5 minutes and the building is engulfed in flames.Fire started in the wall panel, lit the 71 econoline up and it just got worse from there. Then the LNG line let go for the furnace..We now have a very hot fire.I was already told everything in the shop was destroyed.I went home thinking I just lost a car.

I'll keep the story short....What they didn't know is the shop has another concrete wall 2/3 of the way across..My 67 and a 2004 Corvette were on the other side of the partition..Roof over the other side was already on the floor and it got so hot it was blowing holes out of the wall. They thought it was a meth lab at first because it was so hot..

My car and the Corvette were actually fine...I didn't find this out till late sunday. It looks like enough water got in to keep them safe from the heat.My decals didn't even lift..My car cover has some holes in it from stuff coming down from the roof. The car was wet so no real damage..Got the car home and Mary cleaned it up and we took it out for a drive....Cant believe my luck.

Cody...the owner of the building managed to pull a wake board boat out by hand but that was it.The toxic fumes got to him and he spent a few hours in the hospital but he is ok.........You can see the door on the right of the pic..

Other than Cody's minor injuries I don't think anyone got hurt..There were 5 firetrucks up there and a half dozen RCMP cars..

Here is the news report..As I said everyone thought the contents were destroyed...

Pic of the remains...Wall did its job and so did the fire door...not to mention the Fire fighters..
Cody (owner of the building) tells me they were pumping water and fire retardant into the roof on the other side..That was the stuff that filtered through my car cover..The Corvette was parked with the hood open and its buckled now....

Geez!!  Something similar happened to a shop nearby me in 2018.  This is about 2 miles from where I live:

It was a shame- the guys at Hawks are awesome, and I have two friends that work there.  They only do GM, but I won't hold that against them...

Wow! Just....wow!
I feared the worst when reading the first paragraph of your post. That's amazing that the fire didn't spread through the roof and siding alone! I would have felt sick to my stomach seeing the blaze, thinking my car was torched. Glad to hear it was okay, and that nobody was hurt.

Better go out and buy a lottery ticket while you still have such good luck.
Sorry for the owners loss but glad your car made it out OK.

Wow.  You are very fortunate.  Very sorry for the others that lost everything.

This is where having more then enough insurance on everything comes to light.

Cody sent me this pic on Monday night...After the building cooled down they pried open the doors..You can see it started to breach the wall above the Corvette..I had forgotten about all the drywall on this side..Man/fire door is open to left of my car (red cover) It certainly did its job...I am told the fire was started by a faulty battery tender or charger....

Amazing that the side where your car was is still standing. Gotta think the Fire Dept did a great job. For those who don't know, Cory is a bit out in the country and not across the street from a Fire Hall. Interestingly, I was reading something recently about battery tenders failing and causing fires. May have even been a recall on some. I'll see if I can find the article.

...I am told the fire was started by a faulty battery tender or charger....

I usually have about 4 of them on batteries at any given time. I'm always a bit paranoid about electronic stuff being used when I'm not around, now I'm doubly so. I think I'll unplug them tonight...

Makes me want to get some bread baking tins and have them live in them.

Edit
My wife told me they’re called loaf pans.
