Thinking of a 410 build for 64 F350
« on: June 06, 2020, 09:01:24 AM »
I bought a 64 F350 last yr. Been updating it for a tow rig. The old 292 runs good but it lacks road speed with the 5.38 gears and 4 spd tranny. Going to change out the gears for a 3.50 set. I`m inclined to build a 410 I have, but debating about a cam. Now here`s what I`m pondering about, I have 2 FoMoCo cams. One is a 391 and the other is a 427 marine cam std rotation. Both look very good on the lobes. I`m going for torque when loaded, 60-65 mph loaded. Can`t find the specs on either cam. Any sugestions?  The car is my 64 galaxie and an open 18' car hauler as far as weight.

The 410 is going to be around 10.5 nominal if you rebuild it with typical 410 pistons. If you use a "torque" cam in a heavy truck towing a load I would think it would be ping city. I'm sure the 391 cam was meant for low compression and probably drops dead at 4500 or less. I have no idea about the marine piece. Might be worth buying a new cam that will bleed off some cyl pressure. My 1 cent thought.

I've always thought that Ford should have made the 410 an option in trucks. A Camper Special or Highboy with a 410 would've been a hot seller.

My 02. I wouldn't mess with the 391 cam for the reasons FElony mentioned. The boat stick would be a step in the opposite direction from the 391. Lower cylinder pressure. I'd be leery of using any cam that I didn't have a card to anyhow. I would probably find an RV grind thru one of our members/vendors. It would be a roller too. Because affordable motor oils don't play nice with flat tappets. The 3.50 gears will be good for flat roads. But if you have any passes to roll over, I'd think about some 4.10's. Depending on tire height of course.

This is gonna be a neat tow rig. Would love to see some pics.
