C3ae 6090c heads

Spotted a lone c3ae 6090c head laying in junkyard today and was wondering if it were worthwhile to grab it and possibly locate the mate to it?    It was near a couple mel heads under a grappled up Edsel

Most likely a 390 head but there were a few small chamber 406 6V with that part number. Did you catch the date?
You could offer the going rate for cast iron, lol.

Spring cups are an easy way to spot a 406 head vs a Denver/High Altitude 390 head. As for Ford vs machine shop spring seat cuts some of the others here could tell.

You know guys, I don’t think I’ve ever seen side by side the difference in spring cups.
It would be neat if someone could post a couple pics of that.
I have a set that I thought have machined cups but I’ve been told they are not.

Didn’t have spring cups.   Didn’t think to check cast date , but only one.   Couldn’t find the other.     I usually pay .10/lb.

I have set C3 heads but I dont know if they are 390 or 406. A side by side picture would be nice. I've had this set laying around for 20yrs.

The C3AE-6090-C’s might be the most misidentified FE heads, due to old books & casting number lists that labeled them as 406 3-2V heads. That’s a possibility, but the majority are just garden variety 1963 model year FE heads.

Our member Ben H. recently posted a few pictures of actual C3AE-C 406 heads, and some identifying info on Facebook, I don’t necessarily want to steal his pictures, hopefully he see’s this thread and will post the pictures here too. I have a set of the garden variety C3AE-C heads, and I added a pic of mine in the valve spring seat area to his on Facebook for comparison.

I was just making sure it wasn’t some holy grail left in the dirt to be processed into rebar or something.    I’ll try to swing by there next week and get it if it’s still there but work may keep me out of town.  Now if I could just happen on a single tunnel port head to replace my damaged one..................

Ive seen pix with the springs in but you can’t tell what’s going on. Would love to see side by side unsprung heads.
Here’s a pic of mine so now we only need the real thing.

Another point is the last 390 set I had recently had 67 cc chambers. The 406 is listed as 63 cc.

Here are some pics of factory machined spring seats. One small block, one FE. I also would love to see a confirming pic of the C3AE-C 406 6V head with machined seats. I was recently shopping some C heads with very late 62 and very early 63 dates and they did not have seats like these do.

Now that you posted the F head that is how I remember my HiPo heads I had in 1990. Should have had those exhaust ears fixed.

Thanks fan that shows the difference well.
First time I’ve ever seen that.
I never understood the difference because it was always described to me as a “machined seat”.
Well the one in my pic is a machined seat.

I’m not certain Turbohunter. Yours and a pic of the heads I was shopping look the same. The head pictured has a 67cc chamber. All the listings for the 3 x 2 C heads I have seen are less than 67cc. There is not really a pocket or relief on your head or the ones I was shopping. I’m not ready to call them 406 heads.
