Pistons for FE Power Heads?
« on: February 13, 2020, 08:29:45 AM »
Jay, does CP have a program for your heads yet?
I’m building a Genesis block with Blue Thunder heads and would like
to have pistons made so that I can swap your heads on when they become available.
Thanks!

Yes they do, but I'm not sure how best to order these.  Let me contact my guy at CP and see what he says.  I'll get back to you on this thread.  Also  FYI, the picture below is of the pistons I ordered for the dyno mule that I will be testing the heads on.  I plan to do some comparison testing between ported Edelbrock heads, CNC ported Blue Thunder medium riser heads, and my heads in unported condition.  So, the pistons are designed to be used with the standard FE valve location, or the valve location that my heads use.

My sales contact at CP thinks it would be best if the piston orders went through me, at least at first.  He thinks there's less of a chance of problems that way.  If you want to PM or email me your engine specs I will get back with him.  FYI, the pistons I have are described with the CP sheet shown below.  Top ring is steel, second ring Napier.  We can modify the parameters as required for your build.

Couple of questions,
Could they make that piston with a larger dish to drop the compression down to ~ 10-10.5 to 1, and have the dish mirror the cylinder head chamber to maximize quench?

Also, I see those pistons have the gas ports drilled in the top, would this be recomended for a street engine? I see a lot of races do it, but don’t see many street engines doing it, wondering if it’s just not recomended, or if the gains vs cost are not really there on a street engine.

Thanks Jay

I'm sure they can make the dish any way you want, at least within reason.  Lower compression should not be a problem, but if you want to maximize the size of the flat quench area then the dish would have to be deeper for any given compression ratio.

You could certainly get them without the gas ports.  I like them myself for street engines, and have not had issues with them plugging up, but over the long haul (20K miles?) they probably would.  Depends on how long the motor would be together.  Blair, Barry, or Brent probably know more about this than me, and may have comments on this.
