Pulling engine and transmission together - tips needed
« on: February 05, 2020, 02:48:34 PM »
Ok, so I’m getting old and need to think harder and work smarter. Shoulder issues also figuring in on the equation. I want to pull my 390 from my ’66 Fairlane as I am finishing up my 427 (484 stroker) to put in. Dropping the four speed from underneath has been the way I always got the transmission out. I see people pulling engines and transmissions out together. I think I’ll give it a shot. Any tips? I have a tilter. I currently have the front up on ramps but I think with the trans hanging I should put the front on the ground so I have clearance over the radiator core support. Again, any tips to save this aging body would be great thanks!

Get the rear as high as possible and get the front as low as possible. If I were using a portable engine hoist on wheels, I think I'd even take the front tires off to get it lower. The higher the angle, the easier it is to do it....as long as the car is safely supported.

+1 on what Doug said.  Also, get the engine part way out and then unbolt the headers so they are not in the way as you tilt the engine up and out of the car.  You may only need to remove one; on my Mustangs its the passenger side.  You may need to unbolt the idler arm for clearance.  Reverse procedure to install.

^ What Jay said.  I wish we had done that a few weeks ago when we pulled the 428 and C6 together.

A friend let me borrow a 2 ton engine hoist, since we had to raise that engine/trans assembly quite high.  I cleaned the surrounding paintwork (fenders, cowl, etc), put down clean shrinkwrap, and put moving blankets over all surrounding surfaces.  Even with all of the clearance we could get, it was still tight getting the transmission out without whacking the crank snout against the radiator support.  We had to remove all pulleys, the damper, etc to clear, but again the car was sitting flat on the ground.  Had I done what Jay suggested, I bet it would have made life much easier.

We did totally remove the headers before pulling the engine/trans though as some of the primaries would have posed an issue vs steering components.  I did not have to disconnect the idler or remove the pitman arm because the headers weren't present.  I don't know what brand I have, but they are crazy even for equal length, individual primaries.

Previous to this car, on mod-motor Mustangs, I would simply drop the k-member and lift the car off of it on a 2-post.

Also these helped prevent a mess:

This my preferred method also. Headers on, trans on. I pretty much only remove carb & alternator. Its ok to say get the front low but you still have to get the cranes legs under there (and out!) if using that style. But yeh, get the rear higher like Jays pic. Make sure you plug the rear of trans well.

It will come out with the headers and top loader on it. As mentioned get the ass up about 20" and get the engine/trans at about 70 degrees.
Someone here turned me onto it and it went perfectly. I was enthralled considering the difficulties with getting the 6114 Hookers on as an afterthought.
The Remflex Header Gaskets requires about 25 lbs of torque to compress. They seal better than anything I've ever used.

Thank you all. The rear is jacked up. Disconnect a few things and it will be out on Saturday.
