Engine position question
« on: December 30, 2012, 12:30:58 PM »
Need to figure out where my block should be.

Got this 68 fairlane with modified shocktowers and need to make some engine mounts.
Does anyone know how far back and deep the block should be? Or where can i find such information?
Really appreciate any inputs.
(Oh i have been advised to buy new engine mounts, but there is really nothing to bolt them to..)

Thanks
Stefan

Tin man fabrication makes a nice set of universal mounts and competition engineering has a newly released mid mount aluminium plate. As far as location I would go as far back as possible for better weight distribution.

Universal Mounts Will be fine but i still need to know where the Engine should be since the old mounting Points have been cut out..
Im confident i can make new mounts but to make sure headers Will fit i need to get height and location right..
Thanks

Has the car got the stock firewall in it?  If so, firewall to cylinder head on one side or the other ought to be a good reference, if someone has a car that they can measure.

You should be able to use your transmission mounting holes and cross member then measure forward. This will at least give you front to back placement; up and down I'm lost unless you can kinda do a dry run.   Good luck

Mine has no engine yet but there was less than a couple inches behind the head, I had to get the ground strap with an open end and the bolt bottomed on the fire wall. Had to pull the heads to remove the manifolds too. The whole engine was shoehorned tight.

Come to think of it you could align the whole deal by using the bell housing and align your clutch linkage and bam there she goes height and length in one shot.

Tell ya what in the morning when it isn't 40 below wind chills out I'll mock it up with the original mounts and original cross member and take some pics with tape in hand so you can get exact placement, I found the mounts earlier. I am going with the rubber mounts in front but fabricating a new member out of something better than a soup can. I am going with a mid mount tied into my cage for support so all the torque is transferred to the toque box. And forward cage rails.I'll let ya know when I get the snow and tarp off and get pics and you tell me what you want to see.don't mean to rattle on but I do that LOL.

Originally I was going to use these mounts if the frame bracket is placed at the top of the frame rail it is properly placed. I had to call to get dimentions and calculated from there.http://www.tinmanfabrication.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=125/category_id=88/home_id=-1/mode=prod/prd125.htm

Thanks for your inputs,
I got what seems to be a factory correct crossmember but there is nothing to bolt it to,there are something missing and id love to see a pic of how it should look.
(I have searched but really have not found anything).

Also i tried to use clutch Z-bar for alignment but i only got an original Z-bar with no brackets..
(And since i got an "old school" ultra stiff clutch that im gonna use and a complete beeefed up Z-bar with brackets out of a Mustang that i'm gonna use for inspiration when i make my own Z-bar, i dont want to buy original brackets only to align the engine..)
At least if i dont have to :-)

Id love to see pics with a tape measure :-)
Thanks
Stefan

Why not use the headers to position the engine, then they will fit !!!
