2020 GT500 runs 10.665 stock
« on: December 04, 2019, 01:40:47 PM »
I watched a video of a 2020 GT500 with stock tires and a young kid driving run 10.665 @133mph. That is pretty impressive for a totally unprepped car. What also blew my mind is he is at the Motorplex (NHRA?) and made multiple 10 second passes WITHOUT a helmet. They said it was a track rental but really? Any way this is an awesome car, here is the link. Jim

Yep, that’s scooting right along, technology is amazing.  Imagine how fast it’d be if it didn’t weigh 4200lbs!!   I know they’re jammed with tech and safety items that boosts weight, but damn, 200lbs heavier than my Merc

I hate the fact that you can plop down the cash and drive a 10 sec. new car out of the show room. It should come as a kit that you have to build. That would earn my respect. Just old fart thinking, I guess.

Young kid wouldn't know what to do with a 10.6 car that you actually had to drive.  That one didn't spin, didn't have to clutch it, etc.  Pansy car.

Per the NHRA rule book, he should have used an approved helmet and clothing appropriate for the ET/speed - SFI 3.2A/1 jacket.  Cars 2008 and up factor unmodified are exempt from most ET rules until they rear 9.99 or exceed 135 MPH.  They must be unmodified except for tires and tire must be DOT approved.  Exceptions would be convertibles which must use a roll bar.  Motorplex may have given him a pass on a rental but if he shows up for a bracket race they'll send him off without the helmet and jacket.

Might be a pansy car from a driver perspective, not so much from an engineering perspective.

One one hand I think it's very cool that the factories are building cars like this.................   But I also agree with you.  I think someone should have to put more effort into gaining that kind of performance, that's too easy.  But if they have the money, more power to 'em I suppose.  That's the world we live in now.

From an engineering perspective, all the modern muscle cars are amazing, and it's amazing the times they can run. But watching the in car videos, they seem boring, and they require zero talent, which is obviously proven in that video. All he does is mash the gas and the car does the rest. You don't even have to account for traction issues, the car does it for you. A 13 second Maverick would be more fun to drive, and give you better driving skills. Probably why most of the Mustangs end up against the wall, or plowing over pedestrians.

Great car, but yes.

Luckily it sets up the age-old teaching moment. There's nothing like being brought back down to earth by a homebrew Fairlane sorely in need of a paint job.

Guys at least its a Ford. Its the world we live in.  My wife had a maxima before the Jeep that she has now. It runs 14.2 how many old cars ran that out of the factory on factory of the dealer floor tires. And thats a girls car. Computers are amazing. some of us are using it with fuel injection systems, turbos, prochargers, blowers. Cant get away from them. That being said love my dual quads naturally aspirated Stang. ;) 8)

Just how many KIDS do you think can go out to the local Ford dealership and buy a $85,000. Shelby, and afford the insurance to drive it?  Sure there are a select few parents who will foot the bill, but most buyers will be seasoned drivers with 6 figure incomes to qualify.  A fully loaded Shelby will be expensive with dealer mark-ups and unless we have a downturn in the economy, there will be some price gouging in the real world of daily sales.  Joe-JDC

What I found weird some years ago is the totally linear nature of auto-equipped, modern, fast cars acceleration (I refuse to call them muscle cars!).

None of that waa-waa 60's-70's sound although stick cars still do that to an extent. Just smooth, multi-gear auto tranny shifting. My 2018 Audi S5 with all-wheel drive does 0-60 in 4.3 seconds (zero wheel spin of course) and I'm told after 10K miles it would actually clock a 4.22-4.25 run (forget the 1/4 mile time and speed but it's damned good). So strange though that any one could slip into this car and do the same, no racing experience necessary.

'Course, this also explains some terrible accidents at speed when the driver didn't respect the car.

Thus comes all the Mustang crash Memes on the internet.  Overpowered cars with underpowered drivers.

Funny, not many Chevy memes.   Due to lack of the actual power to do anything?  Hmmmm, makes you wonder.  Lol.
