Really Really Dumb Question
« on: December 27, 2012, 03:18:07 PM »
Guys,
I know this is dumb but if I don't ask I won't know. With every engine I've done before I made a bracket to bolt to the ends of the cylinder heads to lift the engine with. They are the two threaded holes that end up being at the front left and rear right of the engine. Do I lift the engine the same way with these Aluminum Edelbrock heads. I don't want nothing to go wrong and then find out " I thought everyone knew that those holes wouldn't hold the weight of the engine". Forgive me. I have to ask first. Thanks, Jim

You can lift from there, or from the intake manifold holes, or even from some of the holes on the water pump with no problems.

I have always used manifold tabs from stock engines by placing studs on opposite corners of the intake manifold. That way lifting is easy for servicing an oil pan gasket or motor mount. And tabs are easily removed without disturbing the gasket seal or torque.

Guys,
I'll go ahead and make a bracket to fit both bolts holes in the end of the heads. I've always had luck with that and you don't have to bother the intake. I will post a picture later of a blessing as I see it. It's a big gapping hole between the right side headers ( they sweep back and then down) and the mounting position of the starter. That means I can stop and get gas, shut the engine off and then get it started again when I get ready to leave without having to let it cool down first. Thanks Stan.
I haven't ordered the carburetor yet. I thought I'd give some of you a chance to see what's in it and maybe give me some advice. I'd appreciate it. Keep in mind it will be used as a driver show car most of the time. I need advice on a compromise between driving and kick-ass performance. At least for my capabilities with what I've got. Thanks, Jim

X4 but with one caveat. Make sure that where ever you bolt it to is tight. A loose bolt has leverage that can break the casting.

I had the same question. Thanks

Telling us to tighten up the bolts is a great thought it makes sence.
