Distributor Cap
« on: October 20, 2019, 07:34:20 PM »
Looking for a little clarification on a distributor cap. I am looking for a black large HEI style cap with brass terminals. I see conflicting pictures of the FAST #1000-1550 cap. I see one picture it is blue w/brass like the old Crane that it replaced, one is black w/aluminum, and one is black w/brass. Anybody know the actual color and terminal material of this cap?

If not, what is another brand for the large black HEI with brass terminals. Trying to keep a stockish look, so no MSD, because it looks like those have the logo on them. TIA

I assume when you call the cap a "HEI" cap, you are refering to the large 2 piece cap setup used on later Motorcraft Duraspark distributor, rather than the GM style HEI with the integral coil , correct? If so, I can not recall ever seeing such a cap that was black. All I have ever seen was blue, then gray caps and adapters from Ford, and red caps from MSD. The Duraspark distributors as used on the 75 &76 360 and 390 PU trucks were used with the smaller 1 piece caps, I have never seen a factory FE Duraspark that had the large 2 piece cap from the factory. I wonder if there would be any issues if you simply painted a blue or gray cap with black engine enamel?

Yes Rory, the two-piece deal with the male terminal cap. No GM parts here. :) Also correct, no FE I am aware of with this factory large cap in black. Just wanted to try this color for the look. I may settle on a gray cap, but need to find the right shade. Just wanted to see what the black would look like. Thanks.

I've never seen a black Duraspark style cap either.  Blue (Ford), beige (Accell), red (MSD).  My thought is that if I wanted a black one, I'd mask the terminals, scuff it or lightly dust it in the blaster, wipe it down with prep and spray it with a plastic compatible paint.

Thanks Lance!

That looks like the FAST one I am interested in. I will be considering that one too. Somehow, the only black MSD cap I came up with, had the logo and screw-down top for wire retension. I may try to find a gray one that looks the right shade. Trying not to make things stick out too much. I put my blue Crane cap on, but looks kinda outta place for my plans.
